Good effort by shuoc today (thanks especially for beating INT on all three legs, sparing my blushes ). Great to see a couple of juniors heading out first on the last leg too.

The area was pretty straightforward, but I thought my course was extremely well planned. The planner seemed to understand how a relay race works: how to break groups up and bring them together with fair and varied gaffling; how to mix long and short legs so that athletes with different strengths all had their chance; how to dump old gits straight off the back with a sharp climb to the first control .

Obviously I was hoping for a JK-style finickety control pick to stop the fast guys breaking away early. No such luck

I am sure the course shown on the BOC 77 map was not BOC as it was my first ever one and therefore it's unlikely my memory is wrong on this. The finish WAS at the north end. ..

This was the Dennis Howell BOC in the middle of the heatwave.

Thanks! I did not think my memory could be that wrong. I had reason to remember it as I was first starter on M21E (60 started at 3 minute intervals) so had no tracks to follow. Entering the finish field, to my relief, I heard my name announced as first finisher - I even got a clap from the watching crowd! I think I finished about 28th. I also remember it as a hot day.

Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed the last two days. Thanks to all the hard working volunteers who made it all happen

Just want to echo David and Graeme's comments about this weekend. 2 days of really enjoyable orienteering with some excellent planning. Map gave a decent amount of material for discussion too!

Map: vegetation had obviously not been recently remapped (despite note of 2009/10 revision) some tracks were wrongly positioned, contours in quarry were distinctly dubious in parts. Apart from that the main spur gully shapes were OK and the white forest was pretty runnable.

No, I thought it was legible enough at 1:15000, with a magnifier in the quarry, even though the printing quality is noticably poorer than the JK map.

Having commented on the relay courses, I should add that the individual was superb. I'm a big fan of new formats, but this was by far the most enjoyable run of the year.
Standard legs, change of pace in mid green, long legs, detail in the quarry, different flat terrain in the far south, some big route choices. But nothing unpleasant: it reminded me why I got into the sport in the first place. I can't remember a better planned course.
plenty of better courses, yes, but that's mainly on account of a better area and map

A working RouteGadget is now available on the RouteGadget UK site.

I'll start work on the relay RG on Monday morning, relays can be tricky to get working in RG due to all the variations of planning software and planners use of it. I'll post when it's working.

I don't think that's what Gross meant Graeme - more would i expand on my comment.

I think Jon summed it up Gross. But I deliberately worded it as material for discussion rather than being 'wrong', because a fair bit of it was a matter of interpretation (always ripe for discussion!), although I did think at the point where it said 'rough open' on the map, and yet I was in 3m+ high trees (no. 8 on course 18) was stretching the concept a bit!

However, for me the main thing I brought home was, as Graeme says, the memory of some outstanding planning, and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole event, so a big thank you to all concerned.
