As this Appendix is dated July 2002, pre-dating the IOF ISSOM sprint mapping standard, I'm unsure that it is applicable to it.

The rest of the Appendix very specifically refers to ISOM rather than ISSOM. I can't see this doing anything other than refer to ISOM maps. I am actually perplexed why (a) it is numbered 526.1 - 526 refers to buildings and 525 is for crossing points - and (b) why it is used at all - 525 is very clear that it refers to crossing points through or OVER walls/fences, and is much clearer than a narrow line.

Distracted - thanks for the link: very useful for me at present dealing with vegetation on an urban map. Has made me rethink a few things!

Katy, how would putting a non standard symbol on the legend make any difference? Who looks at the legend, definitely not those that already understand ISSOM symbols.

I believe this is one for technical committee. I utterly agree with AWK that the standard crossing point symbol is appropriate for ALL crossing points - creating a UK only extra symbol seems ridiculous on any map, but especially so where people have to know that thick black lines are FORBIDDEN to cross.

I came across this website a while ago and think it offers very good advice, and I try to follow these conventions in the urban maps that I've made:

The "trees and bushes" and "wood or park?" pages are probably what you're after.

And opinions will also vary depending on whether it's summer or winter... mapping is an art rather than a science.

I've used that page two (got it from an experienced mapper) and its useful for ISSOM. Like distracted says is an art. I'd suggest you do a small bit and get some opinions from someone experienced. Sometimes less is more!

I certainly did not spot the stile on the map but could see it as an uncrossable fence with a thicker line. The fence on the otherside does not appear to have this but was certainly shown as being crossed by at least one competitor. I thought I'd learnt something from the first posting. Now I'm more confused, could the stile have been legitimately used if so should the symbol have been specified in the program?

The stile as shown on the map is not an ISSOM symbol, it's a non-standard BOF symbol. The only way to show it with an ISSOM symbol would have been to use the crossing point symbol.

Was that course specific overprint? It wasn't on my course 3 map (extract below), although we didn't go that way. I don't remember seeing it (could be mistaken) on the course 8 map either where it was an option.

I was going to say the same on course seven it was a viable route choice but not marked with overprint. By the way Liam I wish I'd had you map section it is so clear .

maybe belongs here, maybe in the Eden event thread...but the spectator control at Bicton was on the north side of a flowerbed mapped in olive green and marked on the ground with barrier tape.

I have James' map from course 8 and the stile (best route) certainly isnt marked with purple overprint.

In that case I have mis-understood what Katy meant when she said:

I suspect the reason the crossing points aren't shown is because they weren't on the overall map, but were on the individual courses. The reason for that was because the maps were being litho printed and to have purple on the base map rather than the course maps would have been another plate adding to the cost.

Yes, you must have. There are crossing points overprinted elsewhere on the map (all maps), but not at the stile in question.

On the way we lost one carriage when we found that we could not use Exeter University campus for the Sprint due to a change in the dates of term. Fortunately I was drawing a map of Bicton College at that time and they were persuaded to allow us to use their campus. I then redrew the map to the Sprint specifications.

I was glad to read the above on the JK website in Eric Peckett's comments, because my thoughts at the event had been that Bicton College was not really a high quality enough area for a JK sprint. Good to see that it hadn't been the original choice of area.

Just one gripe I had was that we (at least those on the longer courses going into the wooded bit with the boardwalk) could have been told in the details that long trousers were recommended as I certainly came back more scratched than from standard forest events. In all though, the rest of the weekend certainly made up for the sprint, and I commend the organising team on a very successful event - even the weather got better as the weekend progressed!
