It's well documented over many years that a lateish start time is advantageous, so its clearly unfair. On the other hand, giving people what they want makes it more enjoyable.

Surely it's only unfair if the people concerned feel disadvantaged?

I could argue that if they have requested an early start time they are unconcerned about any disadvantageous effect of that start time.

"I'm giving you the unfair start time you requested".

I'm sure this rule was changed quite recently, does anyone know why?

We were discussing this particular rule in 2005 so it has been around at least 5 years.

I'm not sure about everyone getting the start times they requested - we asked for late and have got 11am, which will be a challenge. At least there shouldn't be too many tailbacks on the M5 at 6am...

No, but you might find the M6 is closed.
There are regular overnight closures at the moment for the new 4 lane variable speed traffic installation works between Jcts 8 and 12. It'll pay to check what they have got planned for the weekend if you are travelling early.

I thought it was great at last year's JK and Tay2009 that we had balanced start times - so this time I actualy asked for early starts on one day and later starts on the other day - which is what we got - thanks organisers.
The problem we have is that our kids are not yet confident enough to get to their own starts if they are different to ours, so I asked for one parent to be early and the other late. It would be much more helpful if we knew in advance if we are likely to share the same start with the kids. On day 2 we all start from the blue start - so we could have all had start times close together - but we didn't know that when we entered. However I guess it might me I will be able to see the kids run in.

From the 1997 Guideline 12:

Entrants should be allowed a choice of early/middle/late start times (for the JK this should apply to each day separately, eg an entrant may choose late starts on both days) ...

So this guidance has been around for some 13 years now.
