British Nights weekend

The British Nights is tomorrow. Can someone in Edinburgh tell us if the Pentland Hills are currently snow covered?

Yup.

You'll have the lights from the city and reflected light from the snow. You might as well leave the torch at home

No snow at KB though.

The snow has melted a lot today though, and it's supposed to be quite warm tomorrow as well, so more will have melted by tomorrow night.

I'm looking forward to watching it from my sofa.

After my performance in the Scottish nights I think I need floodlights not just a vague glow in the distance. It should be fun though, until I meet a man in a ditch with a gun...I think the advice to carry on and ignore him is a bit optimistic!

Had to DNS for this one due to my dodgy ankle but the spectacle of 30 or so headlights dotting the snow covered hillside above the edinburgh bypass was some sight on the way back to my hotel tonight!

That was a tough physical course, with the soggy snow making it tougher still. I liked course 2, except the huge climb up to control 8. From there, skis would have been useful for legs 9 and 10.

It really felt like old-style, hard core orienteering. Going out last and alone, it gave a kind of adventure-excitement feel I remember from my first few events.
I didn't enjoy doing the climb in mushy snow on the long leg - but its been a long time since I last had to weigh up so many options and route choices, with the thought there could be minutes at stake. The control was a bit noddy (course 1 had a better leg), and missing it out (i.e. run 7-9) might have been even better. Well worth a bit of physical pain for a leg like that!

I didn't have my brain in gear at the start so held my map upside down and started off 180 deg out. It took me an embarrassingly large amount of time to realise what I'd done as both ways had a fence to your north (or south as it was). With the TV cameras there I was too embarrassed to do the sensible thing and return to the start, anticipating being filmed and "oh look they allow incompetent beginners to have a go too, how nice.." type comments, so ended up off the map and taking ages to relocate. After control 2 my brain started working and it was fun. Wearing Sealskinz socks was a good move, I should have worn my spikes too.

They didn't know, but once the date has been decided it will be publicised - everywhere!

I'd place my bets on Sunday 28th, 7pm BBC2. They mentioned on last sundays show that the orienteering would feature on the next edition, and I think it's usually the last sunday of the month.

Perfect evening entertainment after the Trossachs or Grangemouth 10km.

Is this program just on in Scotland? If so is there any way those living elsewhere can see it (apart from the drastic step of going to Scotland ).

It's a BBC Scotland show, but the BBC are normally quite good about putting their regional programming on iPlayer.
