"Lack of Funding"
Can anyone tell me what funding our World Class Programme got from UK Sport the yeare our boys won the relay gold? I just saw Chemmy £300,000 funding a year plus advertising revenue Alcott complain about a "lack of funding" leaving her poorly prepared for the Olympics, and I'm feeling an e mail to the BBC coming on...
Will? We've got proper fire now!

What funding do you think these amateur orienteers need for orienteering for fun/sport/hobby/enjoyment need, and why?

erm - because its expensive to send people to major events if you want to compete at the highest level. I suspect top level amateur sport transcend the categories of "fun/sport/hobby/enjoyment" you have applied to it. Although I sadly do not have any first hand experince of that!
Judging by your recent posts you know this already

Any Lifts from South Yorkshire please
I dont realy want to beg - but can ANYONE offer lifts to any Urban / major events, from South Yorkshire PLEASE? Contribute to petrol costs of course.
alternatively I can offer 2-3 spare seats.
Anyone please?

Interesting... didn't you make a post asking if BOF could pay for the World Masters (an open-to-all holiday event) because it's very expensive...???

I'm pretty sure that was Lost Old Timer. But the two are sounding remarkably alike.
Anyone got the figures? Scott? Ian?

Erm... yes! - one of the more obvious 'double pseudonyms'...
Funding-wise - it's currently 125k a year from UK Sport (500k for the 4-year 2009-2013 cycle), I think that's slightly lower than it was previously. Whatever the exact figure was in 2008, you can certainly make your point that the entire elite orienteering programme in the UK is being supported by a much lower figure than Chemmy is receiving alone.

Thanks Ian, that was what I thought but didn't want to go spouting off before I knew for sure! She must get a fair amount from advertising expensive watches in girlie magazines too!

The top Spanish skier gets over 1million euros in funding... for comparison.

It's about time Britain hád a good looking girl with a personality flying the flag for womens sport in the UK. I saw a great bbc interview with her, and was sold straight away....and her results speak for themselves. We should be throwing cash at her
go Chemmy

Re: "Lack of Funding"
In fairness, Becky, the cost of skiing equipment is rather more substantial than the cost of orienteering equipment.

I cant argue thats shes hot, but in terms of medals, I think the money for Orienteering is better value......

Re: "Lack of Funding"
So she needs more than our entire elite programme (Juniors and Seniors) because she has to buy a few pairs of skis? On substantially less than her personal funding, our boys won Gold at the World Champs, and she goes on television complaining to a bunch of recession strapped taxpayers that we're not giving her enough. Maybe she can pose for FHM if you boys are all so keen?
Her results are impressive. It's her public complaints that aren't.

Re: "Lack of Funding"
Maybe helped by the fact that skeleton received 36% of the entire BOA winter sports funding allowance over the last four years?
Becks - I've just got home, and having looked through the stuff I got from UK Sport under FOI I can't find any orienteering funding figures for 2007/8, but I have a feeling that it was less than orienteering gets under the current package.
