Mobile-O has been going a few years, and as far as I know there has been an event in the UK - Wimbledon? - see the website:
http://mobile-o.freeweb.hu/index_en.html
Has anyone tried this, or could we organise a UK event? or further info on what actually happens - how the person is 'guided' around the course.
An International Event is being held on 27th March (Runner in Seattle, but obviously the navigator can be anywhere in the World).

Re: Mobile-O
SLOW have done a couple on Wimbledon - see our results page for 9/6/09 and 17/7/07.
Actually navigator can't be anywhere in the world, because we know it as a pairs relay - aftre one run they swap roles and the other course can be the same/gaffled or totally different
Most fun bit is watching the navigators at start/finish - concentrating on mobile and map with a fair number tearing their hair out as they've no idea where their runner's got to ("what do you mean you can see a lake!?)

Following on from The Loofa, there was a more recent one, last year, again on Wimbledon Common. See here for more details and photos, generally of people standing around with mobile phones...
Stop talking, start running.

Re: Mobile-O
Not sure the photos of lots of people standing talking into mobile phones is one we should be pushing with the media if we are to improve our image (see separate thread!).

Re: Mobile-O
Never tried this but it sounds fun. There's clearly a bit of scope for improvement too - use of hands free to allow the director to take bearings maybe?
I wonder if theres ever been any crossover between this and trail O? Seems like there would be a bit of scope for teams of one able bodied and one disabled competitor. It looks like it could get quite tense for the director.
Forget the Olympics - how about phone Orienteering as a paralympic sport? We could call it "remoteering"

Holding a mobile phone in the same hand as you punch at an SI unit can cause a mispunch.
