Re: HALO Urban Race 21st Feb
Bumping this thread to remind people that it's the first race in the new Yorkshire Urban League series on Sunday.
From the Elgin map, it looks a bit like a very flat version of Skipton. Plenty of passageways to run along, and a few canals/rivers, plus some modern estates with lots of dead-end roads. Looking forward to it...

Snow Report
Despite SNOW this morning the organiser has reported that controls are being set out at present and the event is ON.

Yes, and what a lot of snow there was - but well worth the 2 hour journey from Sheffield. Many thanks to the brave HALo team.
Great course - B - and some tricky controls the 'wrong' side of walls - tho it may have been better if the Uncrossable walls had been in bolder / thicker black. The map lines seemed to be smllaer than usual?
It was not always clear (especially in the snow) if you could get through certain ways and ended up at least twice doubling back and going round.
Looking forward to the rest of the Yorkshire, and Nopesport Urban Races.

I know the area quite well and have run on the map but still got caught out a couple of times. Agree with line thickness though. I saw one reasonably legitimate route choice where I know for a fact the boundary is uncrossable but not marked so on the map - hope that didn't catch anyone out! Otherwise a nice run round, b.t.w. there are even better bits to the north and south and east of the mapped area - urban long-O anyone? - just have to persuade someone to map them!!

Congratulations to HALO and it's members for putting on a superb event in the snow yesterday at Beverley. I must admit when we arrived and parked in 2" of snow I didn't think it would still be on however common sense prevailed instead of the usual Health and Safety/ risk assessment rubbish. I really enjoyed the event despite having to walk due to a heavy cold and although slippery underfoot, in trainers, it was still great fun. Good to see cheap entry fees too £4.50/£2 what a bargain makes you wonder why other clubs can't follow suit. Well done HALO and thanks to all involved.
I'd rather be orienteering in a Scottish Forest.

Yes - the right price for the average event... It makes you wonder why the Claro Ripon urban race is going to be £7!? and WAOC Huntingdon £8!!! (and thats for BOF members). If its just because they are 'Nopseport' league event then its a total rip-off - should attract more runners, so increase the profit. Event entry fees should be standardised (and reduced).

That will happen around the same time as mappers' fees, landowners' fees, printing fees, equipment hire fees, entry system fees, toilet hire fees and first aid cover fees are standardised.

I will refrain from saying something very rude.

I'm not a member of Claro, but am fully aware that they are having a professionally drawn new map. This is very unusual for the club, who have, in spite of their small size and hard working volunteer base, managed to sustain voluntary mapping for most of their events. Over the years, Claro have done extremely well in providing low cost orienteering.
Given the cost of that alone (even without taking into account other costs), they would need a very large entry to make any sort of profit, certainly more than the entry at Carlisle.
Rather than a ripoff, youngladdie, you'll almost certainly be getting a bargain.

WAOC have had a professionally produced map of a new area (survey etc. by gg
I believe) and will need to recover their costs, not only of the mapping but the planning and organising. I do not believe that either WAOC or CLARO are trying to ripoff anyone.
In any case any "profit" from either event will get ploughed back into orienteering in some way or other.

Nor do I; moreover, given the commendable example set by AWK above - I will also refrain from being rude gusting offensive
