Urban races rather explode the whole business of embargoes.

I am sure everyone wants them included in the rankings list, and as Level 2 events (or if the RJs of this world get their way, as a "High Profile" Urban Event. - Super Level2?)

I am pretty sure that, although I am not one, most adherents want the London's, Edinburgh's etc to remain annual races.

Next year Edinburgh, as will happen with other annual Urban events, will effectively break the embargo for everyone, not just those who live, work, study and shop or whatever else there. The event is less than 1 year since the previous event.

None of this, in my opinion, devalues the race or its worth.

Embargoes for WREs - but do we really need them for anything else.

E.g. I'm damn sure that I know Burbage as well as any SYO person who trains there, despite not having run there for a year or two. Trouble is they run and navigate faster than me. That's what gives them the advantage - not local knowledge.

There were some new bits this year which have been added since I ran in the inaugural Edinburgh race (the only one I've done) - but most of it was very familiar.

But people rave about Venice - and its the same map every year. The challenge remains great.

From the two glances I've had at this year's Edinburgh RG it would seem that consistent running speed rather than navigation or local knowledge were the main determining factors in the results although there was a bit of nip and tuck between Mrs H and Wendles near the end.

Embargoes for street races are a bit stupid, the challenge in urban O is to run fast enough while staying on a (fairly simple) chosen route for the length of the race (and avoid any howlers). Running round some of the edinburgh streets will not help. However running legs of old races and potential new legs would give an advantage, however any ban of this relies on honesty and goodwill from potential competitors. Come to think of it so does an embargo on any other terrain - the chances of getting caught are infinitesimally small. So lets grow up and ask competitors not to cheat and leave it at that.

Is the Walton Chasers event from last Sunday going to fall foul of the one week deadline for getting the results on the BOF website.
The results came out quickly and there was a note saying they were to be submitted to Bof when they got the password. I keep looking but nothing has appeared.

Most likely not as I've seen a comment saying that in the early stages this 7 day rule will not be enforced.

However, how do people feel about events being included in rankings where some maps are recycled and in some cases given to runners before the 15 minute walk to the start (as I understand happened last week)?

The GO results took closer to 2 weeks than 1 to appear and are included - so you should be OK.

So are you saying people had the maps and were asked not to look at them? If so you just have to trust them. No different to embargos, which are also impossible to police. Or forthat matter me running start at CS Cup event and being 2 yards from the map of my course for 4 hours.

Spookster - as far as I am aware my club doesn't have a "club result secretary" we expect each event organiser to sort results out and upload to web etc - to do with spreading the workload and increasing breadth of experience (we've found this useful up here in the frozen north with a very limited membership). Having a centralised prescriptive system forced onto us doesn't exactly enamour BOF to us! Why not allow clubs to open up the system to as many people as it wants/needs - let the system serve the people rather than the other way round?

As far as I know, clubs can register plenty more than the suggested two people as CRS. I'm sure the organiser of each event could email Caroline and ask. There does need to be some control - i.e. it couldn't just be open for anyone to upload anything.

What was wrong with using something similar to the old results-link upload system? Or even just a club password? Sometimes I think these things are over-complicated - we should be making it as easy as possible for clubs to upload results.

There still seems to be a bottleneck in the process of submitting results to BOF for ranking.

My own club managed to publish the results of the SUFFOC Punch regional event on the club website by 6:45 on the day of the event ~ Saturday 13th February. It's stil not showing on the BOF events database ~ 9 days later.

A colleague made the following comment to me earlier today.

There is a problem - you run a L2 event and want to post the results for Ranking Points ...... problem. I have been waiting months for access. Events have been submitted but seem to disappear down a "black hole".
BOF have taken on far too much and I do not think they have the staff numbers to handle all the problems.

We seem to have created an administrative bodge. This authorisation process seems to be inflexible relying too much an under-resourced BOF office and on pre-nominated club individuals.

Such a shame as these frustrations tarnish the fact that BOF otherwise seem to have created something that is worth promoting to the membership.

According to rankings FAQ 14:

We originally limited each club to two CRS so that we could offer sufficient support. However we are now in a position to extend that to 4 CRS per Club (if required). We have also offered Associations the opportunity to nominate Association Results Secretaries, who could upload results for any events that took place within their Association.

Presumably the results aren't there because none of the possible 4 people who could do it have yet done it?? Spookster said earlier in the thread that uploading results was simple. So is it just you have asked for access to upload and haven't yet got it?

I don't think this is the full story, it doesn't quite add up.

You say he's been waiting for 'months' but access was only given out to non-testers a few weeks ago so the system was even ready until then. At the same time access to the results upload section was granted a fairly comprehensive set of 'how to' documents were sent out. If you have trouble with these I'm sure BOF would be more than happy to take a phone call to try to sort it out.

I'm tempted to try uploading results from our L3 event yesterday just to see how the process works, I will try this in the next few days...

There would appear to be some sort of backlog in supplying the nominated CRS's with the relevent info. I have been waiting for 4 weeks for the login info and operating instructions. I will not be holding my breath whilst waiting for the info. to arrive. I can only hope that the info arrives before the next event for which I am doing results, otherwise competiors will have to rely on the club website
