I was thinking of entering this event so I just checked the website.
I can't see any mention of how the results of the 5 individual regional events will be combined to determine overall results.
Is it a points system, best 4 from 5 (similar to the Scottish) or
total combined times (as the O Ringen)?
It would help to know before deciding how many days (if not all) to enter.
Or am I missing something?

Re: Lakes 5 Day
Is the optimizing of individual placing in the final results table more important than the taking part and enjoyment of each day (or just the odd one or two days)?
Interesting thought - not trying to have a dig at anyone
but why do we all orienteer, we can't all win.
There must be a multitude of reasons, as I'm not too good or fast I just enjoy being out there. But I have to admit that at my 1st Scottish 6 days last year I got interested in my placings.
When someone said their aim was to finish in the top 2/3 I realised I didn't have to be in the top 3 to succeed and could aim lower (I aimed for top 2/3 and think I just about made the top 1/2 but I'd have to re check that!

True, but Homer can.
Only if he goes to enough days. Which kind of brings us back to his original question...

Re: Lakes 5 Day
Disappointed to see that there is no White course (and therefore no W10B and M10B) at the Lakes 5 Day. Apparently the terrain makes planning a White impossible. So how come the Scottish and Welsh 6 Day manage to put on a full range of courses?
Could they possibly try using some taped routes here and there? That's what happens in Scotland - and the kids soon get used to it.
As we have 8 and 10 year-old children - this now rules this out as a family holiday we had been planning to go to
Shame.

Re: Lakes 5 Day
There will be a points scoring system in place for each day and the best four from five scores will determine the winner in each class. Prizes will be distributed at the end of day 5.
Some of the terrain has very few line features making it inappropriate for White / M10A / W10A courses. A string course will be available on each day.
Apologies to the Scots who cannot attend because their schools will have restarted. The original date was changed from early August to avoid a clash with the World Masters in Switzerland.

Lakes 5, think you might need to make an amendment to your post. Don't you mean white, M/W10B?

Or spend some of the next 6 months getting them to a standard where they can complete a Yellow course.
If someone competing at White level is actually reading the map, then I think the White-Yellow transition is potentially easier to achieve than Yellow-Orange, Orange-Light Green, or Light-Green-Green.

Shadow them on yellow, should be cheaper than badge course and they'll still get an experience, you can use it for coaching, then they will still meet up with friends. We did that many years ago with 6 & 8 year olds. They started 2 mins apart and I shadowed and they had their own battles but made really good friends. One thrived on the O the other on the Lakes scenery. It is one area where the second would still go out with an O map.
However it is a shame that there are no white courses when we are desperate to get youngsters involved. The numbers entering these days are so low it is a shame to alienate the under 10's. Surely the terrain can't be impossible on every day.

Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

Re: Lakes 5 Day
I can't see why there would be a problem planning a white course. The main constraint is the availability of a continuous handrail - which you need for the yellow course in any case.
Indeed, in an area with few paths it is more of a problem planning yellow due to the lack of decision points.

Seems to be to be a major oversight (again). We would be coming as a family if it wasn't for the fact that my eldest daughter starts school this year.
The Lakes is just a stones throw away from Scotland and I'm sure that there are many many O'ing families who might come if it was held 2 weeks earlier. Think of the potential extra entries (and revenue to the event and ecomony etc) from all those families (and teachers???!!!) for holding the event 2 weeks earlier. I reckon that we might spend over £500 in total for that week. Multiply that by say 20 families.......you do the maths!!
Anyone know of any reason why is HAS to be this week and exclude potentially every family from Scotland?????...seems a bit stupid to me!!

Re: Lakes 5 Day
Further up this thread, it says it was to avoid a clash with the World Masters. I'll be interested to see how many people from the World Masters go to the Lakes 5 Day - we agree that there are a lot of Scottish families who would have gone, and aren't convinced the earlier date would have excluded as many people.
There was much disappointment in this household when we saw the dates.
