I fear I'm likely to spend most of my run worrying about whether I'll remember about the OOB that isn't marked on the map .

there isn't much grass in Edinburgh... basically, if you have a big castle to your south, don't step on the grass

Lovely and sunny under blue skies in Edinburgh today.

You probably won't be able to get onto the grass in Princes Street Gardens anyway, because it will be covered in tourists.

(why didn't someone ask the mapper to change the map? )

There is only one area OOB that isn't marked OOB on the map - this is the whole of Princes Street Gardens - this only affects the long course and simply between controls 16-19 (and your approach and exit to these). We will remind competitors at the start.
Its been difficult dealing with local groups for permission with red tape getting worse - one group were unhappy about us using a certain area due to the "uneven pavement"!!! So we really have to cooperate or events like this are going to get difficult. Graeme's done a great job mapping Princes St gardens area and it would be such a shame if we didn't use it.
Good news is there is no ice in Edinburgh at the moment - and its forecast to be a sunny weekend!!! So the race shall definitely be going ahead as planned We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Any chance of an obvious, visible marshal at the entrance(s) to the Gardens to help remind people? I don't want to cause extra hassle (I know only too well how difficult organising big urban events can be), but if it's not olive green then I'm not sure I trust myself to remember that far into the course - and I wouldn't want to be the one to forget and cause problems with the landowner. I doubt I'm the only one who may possibly forget, although hopefully proximity to the castle may also jog some memories.

At the moment we haven't any spare marshals. I think it will be obvious enough. its the parkland with tourists on under the castle. if you really think you won't remember you can borrow a pen after you've started and picked up your map to write on it a reminder!! I'm sure most people can remember one piece of information though! It'll be more of a case that you see tourists in a park and it'll jog your memory.

Its only around the controls 16, 17 and 18 - effectively any parkland North of the railway in that small section is OOB.

experience tells me most will ; however, I'm equally sure some won't as the heat of competition takes over, lactate levels blur brain functionality and some of us just have the memory retention capacity of a goldfish.

Do I interpret correctly that we are allowed to walk across said grass?

There will be a marshal between the 2 controls (which are most likely to cause the trouble) where the line cuts across the grass - I will ask them to look out for anyone heading towards the grass and ask them to advise you back onto the path - hopefully this will catch anyone who doesn't realise. There'll also be a second marshal in the park who I'll ask to do the same. I'm sorry we didn't ask for the map to be ammended in time - it will be taken into consideration next time! Sorry for any inconvenience caused to anyone

Excellent Event euoc. Most enjoyable. Mr h says can he have an inter
ediate course next year as he can't cope with the distance and the dancing a in one day at his age

I agree an excellent course. Wish I could persuade more folk in the club of the merits of sprint courses, especially round Edinburgh with all those wonderful alleys.

apparently Orienteering got mentioned on a phone-it on Radio1 by someone on the way to Edinburgh. They were answering a maths question, and got it wrong.

The person in question is an engineer I believe...
They also got lost on the way to the start of BUCS individual last year...
