So, the final's tomorrow - I can't believe there hasn't been any build up to it before now

8 teams (DEE, SYO, NOC, WCH, OD, WAOC, SO and SOC) battle it out for the title, but will any be able to push OD close?

Looks like we could be lucky with the weather by the time the first starters go out at mid day

11 clubs competed the 2007 YBT final at Normanby Hall (HALO) and 10 clubs competed the 2008 YBT final at Sandringham (NOR).

From the NW, DEE travelled to the SYO event at Doncaster to qualify. The NW qualification event was at Subberthwaite on 8th November but there was no competition as, I assume, clubs elected not to compete due to the travelling distance involved to attend the final - I know that ours did.

CLOK and QO qualified but decided not to come to the final.

The problem isn't that we (the junior team) can't travel down the day before and enjoy an overnight stay.... it's been done before..... it's the travel home after the event, leaving after the prizegiving, particulalry if we are in with a chance of a trophy.... and getting back to Cumbria after midnight. That just isn't fair on the team of youngsters who then have to go to school the next day.

So long as BOF and the Junior Competitions Group see it as being reasonable for the venues to be so widespread and to give such excessive travel times then the peripheral clubs will struggle to attend.

Be careful RJ. BOF etc could take your comments to heart and decide to locate all junior events in the Midlands. Then not only do you get boring terrain, but juniors in the Midlands never have the joy of travelling.

I would far rather have all the events rotated around the regions, including Scotland and Wales. Then junior clubs & schools can decide wether it is worth the time & expense to attend. It would mean that sometimes they decide to give a competition a miss and concentrate on one that is nearer. As long as all the competitions in one year are spread out.

Entries to BSOA showed a number of southern schools decided not to attend, just as the northern clubs have declined to travel to YB trophy.

Thank you BB for the advice. However, it seems so disappointing if the competitions can't be inclusive, where clubs will not be obliged to withdraw because of travel problems. Now it is possible for all regions to be used, but we could choose areas very close to the central EMOA/WMOA borders. With a little thought and careful selection of the venues it would be possible to reduce the travel distance for all clubs.

The YBT only requires TD4 terrain, and it is a junior only competition, specifically to encourage the growth of junior membership in clubs. We were gutted when we had to decline the event this year. We were defending a third place from 2007, and a second place in 2008. The juniors were all asked for their opinion, and they all declined to do the travelling.

If we want this competition then we really do have to address this problem. A venue in the northern part of SEOA would have worked.

Seems to me that the competitions are inclusive but you decided not to travel... that's your & your clubs choice....

And anyway what's wrong with getting home at midnight then up ready for school the next morning... no big deal really

nah, the YBT final is supposed to have a Green course, and Green courses are TD5. and the winner of the trophy isn't the club that got the most new members under the age of 21 in a year is it? Its the club with the most talented junior squad, spread over all technical abilities.

Competitons will never be inclusive. If held centrally the same clubs will have the expense of travel, time needed for travel, bother and expense of overnight accommodation etc. Other clubs will always have everything on their doorstep.

We have had parents complaining of all the above when their child was 'only' going to run a yellow course. Surely competitions should also have a variety of terrain. Juniors from Cumbria must find southern areas very different from what they are use to and vice versa.

If competitions continue to held in different regions then all the costs and expenses will be shared out and junior will be able to run on a variety of areas. When they were held centrally (a few years back) it was never easy to persuade juniors to travel to the Midlands again.

Spread the competitions all over the country and leave it to the clubs to decide to enter or not.

As the person who started and then ran the YBT for some years, I have to say I totally agree with RJ on this one. Putting the YBT final in Crawley in December was plain silly.

When the competition went national, one of the basic criteria was that the final should always be in the M4-M5-M6-M62-A1 rectangle (or just outside it). There's plenty of variety of terrain in that area, ,and plenty of scope for clubs to be 'near' or 'far' from home terrain, and the YBT has been held on some small but good quality areas over the years.

Sadly, that has increasingly been ignored, and clubs are increasingly being left with very difficult decisions. I totally respect WCOC's, CLOK's and QO's decisions, and feel that the YBT is all the poorer without their attendance.

Except in Scotland we have the Jamie Stevenson Trophy for Scottish clubs and you guys have the Yvette Baker. Ours was started later to give us a similar competition. There is just a 'final' and most Scottish clubs attend as it is usually in the Perth area and not too far to travel.
