Re: Regional Events POLL
Why isn't there an option for the system as is - colour coded courses with an age class template?

Re: Regional Events POLL
or to retain colour coded but to display results grouped by age class within each course. Or is that what you meant Mrs H?
This [old] debate isn't about courses available - it's about the way the results are displayed.

Re: Regional Events POLL
I don't go to regional events, as I am supposed to do a course that there is no way I could do, and the kids like to be challenged, but not to much. At the moment we are happing going to local and district events where there is no pressure to run anything to difficult. I don't want to put the kids off, we have now been orienteering for 2 years, they have just joined the Junior devewlopment squad - so having fun and enjoying themsleves is far more important.

Leanne,
the point of the new scheme (colours with recommended stress recommended for your age) is you can run any course you want to.
So if you only want to do an orange run orange. If you want to run a black run a black and ignore the recommendations. I've run light greens this year and I've run blacks (and even a deep black) and most the courses in between!
The call is always yours - so run a course you are happy with, you can move up when you want to - there is no "supposed to". I've run courses recommended for M75L and M21E in the last year. When I was only a couple of years in the sport I went to a "regional event" and ran a red (now long orange
) to get some confidence back after 3 or 4 disasters on M21L.
Don't be put off -err on caution when selecting your course and goto regional events as Clubs often keep the best terrain for these events. Build up to the recommended course over a few events

new idea:
"I run what I want, when I want it, wherever I want it, regardless of my standard, because I want to have fun, a bit of banter, and get better at Orienteering"

Re: Regional Events POLL
Our regional results always give the results in age classes for those who've run the course recommended for their age, or something up from it.
Gives both an age class structure and flexibility as people can run orange one competition and brown the next if they wish, but can stick to the same course if they want to compete against age group peers. I don't see the problem and presume this is something some people should take up with their regional events organisers if they want regional league results presented in a certain way.

Re: Regional Events POLL
With all the fuss engendered by the event structure changes, it would be easy to forget that they only affect a relatively small proportion of British O events. Indeed some people seem to be deliberately ignoring this...
Major events - the L1s and the big holiday events - retain a structure based on age class (contrary to the implication of the questionnaire at the 6 Days), whilst the overwhelming majority of events across the country never were structured around age class.
The only events affected are 50-60 middle ranking events of variable quality (even SOLs are sometimes held on on TD 3 and a half areas). And at these events, where typically previously there were 7 or 8 TD5 courses shared by 40-odd adult age classes, there are now typically 7 or 8 TD5 courses shared by the various adult age classes.
All that's changed is that individuals have a bit more choice and the results are generally shown by course (and in due course ranking points will be generated from course results) i.e. effectively representing what happened, rather than artificially subdivided into age classes.
So maybe the poll ought to be rephrased
"At certain events of middling importance I would like to have the choice to run competitively on whichever course i feel like / is appropriate to my level of fitness. I wish the results (and ranking points) from the event to show my performance vis-a-vis everyone else who competed on the same course, and understand that results may also be presented subdivided into age classes. I appreciate that if I wish to score points in any Leagues associated with these events then I may have to enter a specified course for my age class."
or
"At certain events of middling importance I wish to be told which course i must enter in order to be competitive. I appreciate that if I enter any shorter course I will be considered non-competitive. I wish the results (and ranking points) from the event to show my performance vis-a-vis those in my 5 year age class."
And that's what all the fuss is about? God help us if anyone suggests any serious reform...

Re: Regional Events POLL
I actually felt the most exhausted after a run for a while today after doing a local light green against my 12 year old son. He occasionally runs up to green to compete against me, but asked me to run down for a change.
We both got back exhausted and he beat me by 3 minutes
Perhaps I prefer doing W45 events because it is less embarrassing than being beaten by a 12 year old!
I like seeing how I do against the other W45s (usually badly) but it doesn't really matter that much. There are certain M60s I'd be delighted to beat.

Re: Regional Events POLL
Noticed today that the SROC Whitbarrow results have shown, alongside Course results, Age Class results taken from their ranking lists submission.
Seems a relatively straightforward solution to cater for those who still prefer to see their results this way.
Not that I'm one of them.
