The answer is quite simple
Just make sure the organiser makes it quite clear pre event how the prizes will be allocated, then stick to it!!

This is obviously an issue with "SI entries". In my absense at the Scottish Sprints there were a few cock-ups at prize giving generally caused by SI entries overwriting the elected classes that people chose to enter the event in. This happened despite the fact that our IT guru had realised there was a problem and thought he had solved it - I think eventually everything was sorted out though.

Are you sure they weren't changed if the form said something different? That was the impression I got last night, it sounded as though the forms for potential trophy winners had been studied, although I was fairly peripheral to the conversation. If you/ others put a different class on the entry form that would make you eligible then I'd raise it with the KFO organiser.

I'd be shocked if they used any means other than the database, one of the main reasons it's such a pain to deal with people running out of their age class from a results point of view, the software doesn't easily cater for it.

The entry form wasn't very clear either as it said 'Age', I almost wrote 27 rather than M21...

As I mentioned, I entered Brown as M40 but results show me as an M50 so it obviously hasn't been picked up.

Maybe a shock is due - while working out Championship winners, registration slips are checked - for instance, Graeme had entered Brown as an M35, not as the default database value of M45 - - Graeme wins M35 - that's what he'd entered. If he'd run competitively as an M45 he'd have run Blue.

It does all seem a bit confusing.

Not that I'm likely to threaten the podium at this sort of event but I'd stick with either age class or an open class. I think you should either be able to run your own class or an open class if you want but for example it seems daft that an M40 could choose to run as an M35 when its the same course generally. This just makes the age classes seem pointless.

Moreover, if you check the M21 BOF rankings you'll find Becks is currently ranked above Mharkey for example

I was going to point out my rather fantastic average score, helped by only running 2 races, but then I noticed there are some particularly outstanding scores by people with just one even.

GG's best is 1331, which is the highest actual score, but...

I somewhat doubt an M12 ran M21L at a SOL and beat Ackers by 22 minutes... and obviously, he didn't, he ran the Long Orange.

I need to admit partial blame for Daniel Stansfield's points ! The BOF Ranking System calculation of points isn't quite in harmony with the 2009 colour coded system so when I uploaded the SOL3 Teviothead results I spotted this anomoly, tried to correct it but failed. There was nothing obviously wrong with the SI file but, at the end of the day, it doesn't really affect matters so I gave up - in the hope that no-one would spot it. Took you almost 5 months though !

It might seem silly but for many juniors this is their first taste of winning something, and for many seniors who haven't a chance of winning at Scottish level this is a chance to at least be a regional winner. We need to encourage as many people as possible so don't knock it. And some of the trophies are really nice (apart from the grim reaper ones !)

I didn't realise M16, 14 etc were running the same course as the M21s etc. I've never been against juniors getting oodles of prizes.

However, there is a danger with all of this. There is plenty of evidence to show that those brought up to be extrinsically motivated (i.e. prizes etc.), rarely go on to achieve as seniors. The intrinsic motivation is what really counts.

As for the seniors - big fishes in puddles jump to mind - seems fairly widespread in orienteering, and have never worked out why. Much more fun to take part in a real competition.

awk might be scathing about the level of competition, but there were more people "just" ahead of me than at any SOL "regional event" this year.

Awk, it may have been a small puddle but I quite enjoyed beating several runners varying age groups younger than myself. I personally find it quite draining competing at a high level too often and it is very refreshing to compete at this type of event, so don't knock it.
