Hi all
I'm looking to buy a small LED headlamp and was wondering if anyone had a good suggestion. It's not for orienteering but for training runs through local parks in the winter.
Ideally something light but bright - think there is some good quality stuff out there now? I have a 20-year old Petzl but it's neither light nor bright!
Any advice gratefully received

I'd suggest Petzl Tikka Plus http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/headlamps/compact-tikka-2. You can get it online here for £30.

Re: LED headlamp advice
Tikka2 = 40 lumens
. I have a Myo XP, quoted at 85 lumens (forget the 150 lumens boost, as unusable when running). I'm not fast, but can out-run it. Gave it up as a bad job and opted for an AyUp, but this would be out of your budget. Details here, for reference: http://www.ayup-lights.com/
For the money, I'd look here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/200-Lumens-3-mode ... 286.c0.m14
Most likely unable to do 200 lumens, but will be brighter than either of the Petzl's. My lad ran last winter using a cheap Chinese 130 lumen headtorch that beat the Myo XP hands-down - details here: http://www.bestofferbuy.com/ultrafire-u ... 13804.html

Is the Ay-Up worth it? Looks a bit dauntingly complicated on the site (if very awesome)?
And not too heavy at 200g?

Re: LED headlamp advice
I have a little Petzl Tikka which I use for work and more recently training in the dark.
This thing is indestructable to the extent where it fell 100ft, landing on a solid steel floor and is still intact and working. I wouldn't want to use it in any situation where I'd have to navigate through woodland because it's just not bright enough, but for trail running it's fine. I would advise buying a sweat band to wear underneath.

IMO, the AyUp is definitely worth it for Orienteering. I'll be using it at least once a week through the the coming winter. I bought it ca. 12 months ago and things have moved on, though, although not as much as I expected.

Not really complicated. Much of what you get in a kit, though, is related to mounting the lights on a bike or helmet.

Really no weight at all, especially when compared to Silva or Mila halogens (the mainstay of Orienteering headlights). I use the larger battery and have this in a small compact camera case on a belt to reduce the weight on my head to the minimum.
A cheaper and possibly less complex headlamp that may more closely meet your needs can be found at the following online shops:

Could be worth having a look at the MYO RXP http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/myo-series/myo-rxp.
I got one to replace my old headlamp for BNC this year. Programmable for range of duration settings (I think 1 hr / 2 hrs / longer ) so you can get maximum available power for that period.

Thanks Wayward-O, these look good - I've just ordered one. Hope to try it out at the Maize Maze (but will also take my old Petzl in case it's banned for being too bright!).
