SOL Dalnamein - by STAG
Thanks to STAG for the SOL today in Dalnamein (and the 11-person relay yesterday in Faskally). Both good events, blessed with dry days, good, fair courses and challenging areas. And all put on by a very small club - putting some of Scotland's larger clubs to shame......

I'll second Jon's thanks to STAG - 2 good events.
Faskally was an excellent location for the relay, 8-person option brought in a few more teams I think (and thankfully this year most teams weren't disqualified) - the only quibble was the location of (or rather lack of) the run-in - when you're head to head racing you don't need to be sprinting throguh the kids play area, between parked cars and oblivious spectators and then making a last minute route choice decision over which side of the download tent to go

Did anybody else see the stag around control 123, in the light green west of the gorge?
A stag at a STAG event I thought. Thats good publicity.
( Mind you I have seen a few gramps at GRAMP events.)

Yes - you could just imagine the planner/controller going Doh! when the cars started to park in what had previously been a perfectly good run in. The perils of big events. Hopefully those who were disadvantaged will remember not to make the same mistake!

Re: SOL Dalnamein - by STAG
well the cars and club tents went where they were told to go, and in any case the pen for waiting runners and the download tent were on the line to the last control - can't imagine what the planner / controller were thinking
thankfully no-one got flattened

I saw a stag trotting across the hillside en-route to number 1 (late start) - he wasn't too flustered despite plenty of O-ers around. Must have known he was at a Stag event.
PS Am I the only person amused by the new Stag event signs "welcome to Stag event" - could attract a different crowd from your normal event!

Stag event: Beware any lamposts marked on the map.
Beer at the finish instead of orange juice - no beer at every control - just like Rosisle at Highland 77.

Re: SOL Dalnamein - by STAG
The Highland 77 training day at Roseisle keeps getting mentioned here and in spite of attending it and doing my own course covering all 18 controls, I had no recollection of pints of beer at any of them, let alone them all.
But after digging out the 6-Day results and reports, it turns out there was a beer race and for those who had entered it, there was a course using just 5 of the controls, and with a can of beer at each for entrants to sup.
The race was won by 1975 BUSF winner Joe Sheriff who did the course at 5.5 mins/km and won a £25 camera donated by a Japanese orienteer. Joe had got 921 pts out of 1000 in the previous days main competition but only 766 pts the following day. I wonder why?
Other than myself and Ryeland (whose identity I've never worked out) who were there, other Nopesport posters I recognise in the 6-Day results were Awk, Buzz, EddieH, Gnitworp and Gross. Were any of you at this celebrated training event at Roseisle?

Before my time.... just, but my first proper events (other than school organised introductions) were Darnaway, Glen Tanar and Roseisle - I have fond memories of them all. Can anyone else claim a more distinguished set of forests for their early events?

I started off at grotty place called Great Breach Wood in Somerset. Bit like the Maize Maze but with 3m brambles. 4 colour map with green as the missing colour!
Glad Dalnamein went OK. I was one of the few there for the STAG SoSOL and really enjoyed it. Missed out this time, and doubly so the other weekend. Hoping to get to the Twin though.

I was there spectating, at the second last control. A favoured technique seemed to be to regurgitate (to put it politely) quickly to avoid absorbing the alcohol. If I remember correctly, the winner had mastered this better than the runner-up.
