Re: White Rose
Not sure about the maps - they seemed 'OK' to me - accurate enough in most areas (though boundaries of open/semi-open a bit vague, and a few depressions missed!)
Reasonable White Rose areas on th whole - as rough as you would expect in North Yorkshire in August, but well planned, and enjoyable courses with some variety and route choice over the 2 days. The elephant tracks with a late start helped on day 2 tho.
A really nice Finish arena with good views of the run-ins... but cruel to have the kids climb up to their last control on Sunday, in full view of spectators.
re. the Pacing and Bearing competition - obviously just for fun... as the 'Judge's ' pacing and bearing obviously was very innacurate. How accurate is a compass over 100m? And after measuring the distance with a tape measure last night, he was 4m short of the accurate distance... so obviously it wasnt a case of how accurately you can measure the bearing and distance, but how close to the 'judge's' 'guess'.
What did people think of the 'extra' events - sprint race, hill climb, night event??
(And how come these winners get a mug AND a toblerone - seemingly more important than the main events?)
I think a warm up sprint is a good idea, but maybe on the way if not at the event, like last year at Castle Howard - and when will the whole Castle Howard estate be used?

Its not suprising that the sport struggles to find people to put on events when others open up with such negative comments. I assume Catfish is now volunteering to produce the maps for years White Rose.

Re: White Rose
To balance the negative comments. I throughly enjoyed the two individual days (didn't do the add-ons) - rough wood in places but it is N Yorks in August - you know you are going to get this with the WR. The maps seemed okay to me (and I certainly didn't lose time due to the mapping) and courses provided a good level of challenge - route choices on the long legs were excellent on both days (looking forward to see routegadget!).
Good weather - good assembly area - seemingly good organisation - so from me 'thanks' to EBOR.

So the map was OK then.
Giving up my Bank Holiday afternoon, I'm just setting off to go mapping to update one of our areas. I'd better triple check everything in case Catfish with his critical eye comes to the event.

Re: White Rose
Given the constraint of having to finish adjacent to the campsite, I thought the Blue Course Planning was as good as it could possibly have been.
I don't know who Catfish is, but would be surprised if he/she had had 2 clean runs, and will respect his/her opinion on the mapping the more if he/she had. Personally I find it difficult to make objective judgements on a map when running eyeballs-out through the terrain, and finding controls cleanly tends to colour my subjective opinion.

Re: White Rose
Really enjoyed the weekend, thanks to all involved.
The maps were the only part of the weekend that were 'professional' and were perhaps actually the least professional part of it at the same time?! Apparently without Speakey putting some hard graft in at short notice they could have been a whole lot worse.
All the extra bits seemed brill (though I only did the fell race) - next time maybe I'll just do those...

Re: White Rose
A brilliant White Rose !! Congratulations to the organisers for keeping the faith and making this a real orienteering event for those who want it this way. Great camp field and a real buzz on Friday evening which carried through the weekend. The extra events showed originality and skilled humour.
As to the forests ... it is August in Yorkshire and most of the people there were well aware of what they were going to get. Can't understand this moaning about the quality of the maps. They were so, so much better than my 1982 version of the area !!
Its going to be a quick drive next year over from the Lakes ... finish there on Friday start in Yorkshire on Saturday ... Magic !!

Re: White Rose
Great event;
I thought the sprint race was ideal to shake out the legs after the journey up north - nice format too. Planing for Day 1 (Blue) and the Team Score were tip top and clearly reflected the effort put in.
The maps were somewhat less than perfect but most people I know go to WR cos it's great fun, sociable on the campsite and everything's close together. Not cos they want top quality orienteering on perfect maps and runnable open forest!
Top moment for me was the look of pure delight on the rather large (and that's me calling someone large!) novice bloke when he realised that he'd won a pot with his mate's on the open relay. WR is about that sort of fun for me and I suspect he'll be back next year.
Well done EBOR awesome way to spend the bank holiday - I'll be back next year for more

Of course your Joking the mappers were not volunteers, they were paid good money to produce up to date maps and as a competitor I presume I paid part of that fee, would you buy a box of eggs from tesco's find their bad and then not complain:
Of course I take into consideration the time of year and the White Rose is renowned for the bracken, nettles, brambles and toughness of the underfoot conditions over the years. However in my point of view the M45 courses on both days were spoilt by some really poor interpratation of white, slow run and walk and worst of all veg boundaries:
Day 1,
The area between controls 3, 4 and 5 and back through 3 to on the way to 6 bore no resemblance to colours depicted on the map. The veg bounderies from the track south of 4 to the control was non excistant. (I would also like to add the course would have been greatly improved if the course would have gone from controls 2 to 5 missed out 4 taken in 3 then 6 and 7).
The area between controls 10 and 11 contain a number of large clearings, gorse thickets and veg boundaries.
Day 2
On the approach to and In the area of control one there were at least 3 very distinct pits that were not marked on the map. The control site on the map indecated its was in the light green strip, it was in fact on the white strip.
The vegetation at controls 5, 6 and 7 bore no resemblance to what was depicted on the map. In particular control 6 was a joke so much so that when I was in the vicinity of the control some helpful individual who I presume was having as much trouble as the other 12 lost souls in the area shouted at the top of his voice that he had found it.
Taking all into consideration I did throughly enjoy both days, but not lets kid ourselves, if somethings not right forget the british stiff upper lip and complain as I might add is my right.
Lastly yes if I was a mapper and the price was right for my skills I would considered mapping the next white rose areas. Unfortunately I'm not but thinking about it if that was the finished product of an experienced mapper perhaps I will give it a go!!!

Yes, SYO Member, I did the same today and had to miss the White Rose this weekend, mapping for our SE Middle Distance Champs in Kent next weekend. I hope that Catfish doesn't come because I know that the map is not perfect! (and I'm not being paid) Everyone else welcome.
