The naming of the World Masters OC 2012 will be announced at WOC 2009 in Hungary.
If I remember correctly, next year is in Switzerland and the year after Hungary. 2013 will be with the World Masters Games - not sure where that is yet - Berlin, Turin and Kopenhagen-Malmo were interested...
2012 - I am not sure what the other candidates are (somebody might be able to enlighten us) but my vote is for Puglia in Southern Italy - if I had a vote - Maybe somebody like DJM can tell us how these things are decided?! They have a promo video here (not so many Vets shown here but I think the footage is mainly from the Mediterranean Open O Champs.)

Also, I see there is a World Masters Winter Games in 2010 in Bled, Slovenia

But no sign of Ski-O!

"2013 will be with the World Masters Games"
I believe that the majority do NOT want this - look at this year's paltry entry. For those that say that this is just because it is in Oz again it will be interesting to note the numbers entering if the WMG is in Europe.
IMO combining with WMG is just about the worst thing the IOF have ever agreed to.

It is a fantastic idea to have the World Masters Orienteering Champs in with the World Masters games - it is what it is all about, and brings some prestig and publicity to the events.
Just a shame British Orienteering dont want the chance to support those travelling, and make everyone feel proud to attend; not to mention the opportunity they could have had sponsoring the athletes as all competitors are, and supply a national kit for them.

PRESTIGE
WMG is a commercial organisation making a massive profit on the backs of the competitors. We have to pay huge sums for what? Then we have to pay all over again so that the orienteering organisation doesn't actually lose out.
Have you actually been to a WMG?
What is so prestigous and impressive that will make the IOC take notice? A lot of elderly athletes doing their own thing scarcely seeing anything.
As usual the long races will be 100 miles for the games and impact on them not one jot. The new sprint will actually take place in Sydney so orienteering may just get noticed by someone else, but the downside is that if they can WMG will charge non-competing relatives simply to be there
As Greywolf put it in the far more impressive WMOC in Portugal, no-one seeing all the old folk walking along to the opening ceremony could conceive how this would attract the IOC to the sport. As far as I am aware that is the sole purpose of combining the 2. There are dozens of reasons not to, e.g. choosing our own venues, not having to go to Oz twice in a decade, not ripping off competitors .... and regarding money, the IOF get a massive reduction in income from their largest money cow every time - a real own goal if you ask me.

Berlin, Turin and Copenhagen/Malmö all seems like pretty awful places to organise orienteering events. Yo0u can count me out from M35.

Re: WMOC 2012 - Puglia??
I'm sure the orienteering wouldn't actually be in Berlin (no permissions forthcoming for any forest within the city boundaries!) and there's actually some good orienteering around Berlin (within ~50k of the city boundary) organised by the Berlin clubs - e.g. the German champs 2007 (routegadget, CatchingFeatures map).
On the other hand, there's also some staggeringly dull areas around Berlin too.
Having said that, I think it's MTK Bad Harzburg who are wanting to host WMOC 2012, in the Harz Mountains rather than in Berlin - that's where WOC 1995 was and is a rather different proposition!

Ed you've missed the point about Berlin and the WMG. If a club is applying for the Harz Mountains in 2012 that is not a WMG year - and presumably they won't be wanting Berlin to put on the WMG in 2013, or are the IOF going to put it in Germany in successive years?

ah, ok - I'd missed that the WMG discussion was about 2013 when the topic title says WMOC 2012.
Point about orienteering in/around Berlin still stands.

Re: WMOC 2012 - Puglia??
Sorry for my confusing post mentioning several years. I was interested to know if anyone knew who else was bidding for WMOC 2012. I think those Germans tried for 2011 but Hungary got it. Guess they are going for it again.
IF the WMG is Berlin in 2013, (and IOF continues with WMOC and WMG being together) then I am sure the IOF won't want WMOC 2012 in Germany too. The decision making stumbling block might be the announcement of the WMG 2013 location. Here is their Chief Execs. response (Jens Holm) to where it will be in 2013 from e-mail correspondance with him...
"The world of sport has, like most other industries been effected by the downturn. Especially host cities have been reluctant to commit to events. The contract for the 2013 games is therefore still under negotiation, but great progress has been made. I am sure you understand we cannot make the announcement until everything is in place."
I dont know how likely Berlin is for WMG 2013, but I can see the IOF delaying WMOC 2012 decision until WMG 2013 is decided.

I'm sure you are right but the best solution is to ignore that altogether and allocate 2012 and 2013 as orinteering sees fit.

Has anyone suggested to Boris Johnson that WMG in London in 2013 could provide a suitable post-Olympic event to use some of the new facilities. Then we could all attend the event without having vast travel costs (although the entry fees might still be a problem). Back to Leith Hill?

It looks like Turin has been awarded the 2013 games, so that pretty much rules Puglia out for 2012.

It was announced at the Presidents' Conference yesterday in Hungary that a decision on which of Germany or Italy (from a shortlist of four) would be awarded WMOC 2012 had been deferred until Council's November meeting.
