If there are charging spectators to follow the gps data then surely by association they should be paying the athletes for carrying the gps devices around with them? Or have i opened a whole new can of worms

Is it tric trac they are using? Seems like the athletes need to wear a vest with the receiver in a pocket on the back... looks like the same size as a phone.

You could get the video for free on nrk (norway) or yle (finland) - the links appeared in the worldofo live blog today. The finnish stream worked fine, more reliable than the paid-for coverage by the sounds of things - although you initially had to wait a few minutes for the black background to be replaced by the video.
No gps that I noticed on the video though...
