Re: MDOC Entry System - Closing
Does BOF accept credit cards for membership fees? If so, it probably makes sense for them to process the card payments for entries as well, as the costs ought to be lower as a result of the higher volume. But perhaps they could just offer the "card processing" part for the other systems?

I like it when I buy something online and discover that the company uses paypal, it saves me going through all my bank details again.

Thanks again for MDOC entry system. We have used you very effectively in the past. I appreciate the costs involved using credit cards. We at work spend a lot of time explaining that credit cards are not economically viable to our company as we don't use online systems and our main clientelle are on account. In recent years we have used fabian due to competitor and organiser friendliness. No one has mentioned N trees is that now superceded, it did have some good points, however the system used for at least one of this years big events I think it was the JK was not easy to use and did not give good feedback. Therefore I vote for fabian but it is not perfect perhaps we should feedback our little gripes to fabian to create an enhanced system that works for all. I know competition is good but in a small market it can also be detrimental and hinder advancement.

The JK used the SportIdent system (mentioned by RS above) - it's also used for all MMs except for the OMM, plus various adventure race and bikey things. I've always found it pretty easy to use as a competitor (never tried it as an organiser), but it doesn't really seem to have caught on much except for big events where SportIdent UK are also providing the results service.
Mharky has a good point - would be interesting to see an entries service using PayPal as its payment provider. Last time I looked fees were 20p + about 3% per transaction - or about 5% on a £8 entry...

... and I hate it, because I don't trust them to keep my card details secret. I'd rather use one that does not retain my card details. The small inconvenience of having to enter them each time is worth it to know they are not being retained once the transaction is complete.

You can still choose to pay for stuff using PayPal without signing up for an account (ie. without them storing your card details).

Perhaps with more and more folk using personal internet banking, we could simply transfer the money to the nominated account. If BO kept an account in each members name then you could topup your account from time to time and just pay for each entry as you made it.
Just needs the 'all embracing' system at BO that was talked about and promised some time ago.

Re: MDOC Entry System - Closing
The choice of payment gateway is important, (2 options)
1. Where you enter your card details each time eg. sagepay is popular with the old school, privacy conscious.
2. Payment details storage is popular with the 'online generation' due to its ease of use. eg Google Checkout. (However: There are often issues with old school orienteer's computers not working with GC due to age.)
Oentries will be offering a both options for payment in the near future. If organisers have any wishes I am open for suggestion on how to improve the system from an event organisers point of view. With an aim to make it a simple and elegant process. This is a challenge due to the complex nature of some events.

this is what I'd like from an orienteering entry system. I'm not so interested in what my third choice course is (M21s i guess), whether or not I'd describe myelf as Scottish or British (Scottish by the way!
