The format for the Cliffhanger Ultrasprint has now been confirmed:

3x Qualifying races to be run in any order at any time between 11-12. Each course is approx. 900m with 16-17 controls. Mispunch = 1 minute time penalty.

Top 16 after qualifying (cumulative times) proceed to the A semi final, everyone else to the B semi final. The A semi final starts at 1pm, four people starting simultaneously on gaffled courses every minute. B semi starts at around 1.15pm (as soon as the A semi has finished). Course is approx. 1.4km with 38 controls. Mispunch = dsq.

Top 4 from the A semi proceed to the Grand Final. Grand final starts at 1.45pm, four people starting simultaneously on gaffled courses. The Grand final will be followed by a women's final, a junior final and a veteran's final, each with four runners, based on the fastest times in the semi final. Course approx. 1.3km with 39 controls. Mispunch = dsq.

Prizes will be allocated in the following categories: Open male and female, Junior male/female (under 18), Veteran male and female (45+). Prizes will be awarded based on highest overall finish position - i.e. if a junior or vet makes the Grand Final, then they will finish ahead of non-qualifiers to the final. Prizegiving 2.30pm. In previous years it has been a close and exciting race, and the unusual format means that everyone is in contention!

Don't forget to stay around for a talk by Graham Gristwood on his preparation for the World Champs gold medal winning run in Czech republic last summer, which will take place in the film and lecture marquee at 4pm.

Yeh, I seem to remember a certain Richard Baxter beating 4 top ranked M40's to win the vets last year!

Not quite as intense as 2007 - I seem to remember the final had 33 controls in 800metres. Anyone claim a higher control density ?

Would that be the same Richard Baxter that did the fastest time on leg 4 of the Harvester? Hardly a shabby performance and therefore perhaps no surprise him beating 4 top M40s!

Does anyone know the format of the Dark and White adventure race which is happening on the same day as the Ultrasprint (and is part of the Cliffhanger event)? Does it perhaps include a section of ultrasprint orienteering? I hope so............

No, there are two Richard Baxters, one specialises in weaving in and out of crowd control barriers, the other specialises in picking his way between limestone sink holes at night. Clearly two completely different people.

Details of the adventure race are here and consist of

1. An interesting place for the start box- it may involve a climb or an obstacle to get to the start box….
2. A 90 minute semi urban run out of the event with a score format like our previous events
3. A 20-30 minute run within the show using the Ultrasprint orienteering map. You will need to use a second SI SI Card (provided) and you may have the odd obstacle to cross too….
4. A 120 minute trailquest MTB navigation outside the show ground and into the Peak District
5. An interesting place for the finish box- you may get wet!.....

Hmm, well, the UltraSprint courses do appear to be free between 12 noon and 1pm.

Another epic event with a superb competition followed by what seemed like hundreds of youngsters trying their hand at orienteering for the first time. This has to be one of the best events of the year.

Well done to Oli and the SYO organising team and congrats to Neil, Rach and the other class winners.

Yeah, it was pretty good. The adventure race was good too. Quite interesting switching from a 1:25,000 map to 1:1,000 and then back to 1:50,000 for the biking!
Thanks to D+W for a good day out. Just a shame I couldn't do the Ultrasprint as well. Oh well, there's always next year.........
