Looks like it did for Jonny as well. 6 mins off the pace at the first radio but then possibly the fastest split to the finish from there to end in 10th, which I'm sure will be a big disappointment. Peter Bray 20th in M16 10 mins down.

European Youth Orienteering Championships - Kopoanik, Serbia
12 British juniors raced in today's long event, many competing at this level for the first time. The terrain was challenging with steep bouldery hillsides and varied vegetation. Putting on a British top and competing at an international event (with all the trappings associated with it - start draws, quarantine.....) can be a daunting task with the athletes setting high expectations for themselves. Many were frustrated that one or two errors disrupted a good run and cost them valuable time. This was true for those at all levels and for all nationalities.
The primary goal for our team is gaining experience racing at international level. Jonny Crickmore, who already has a previous EYOC under his belt, raced very well after early problems, proving his ability on the European stage and finishing 11th. Aine was top of the W16 in 24th place.

EYOC continues with relays tomorrow and sprint on Sunday.
M18 Jamie, Alan, Jonny
W18 Charlotte, Jess, Bex
M16 Jack, Finlay, Peter
W16 Aine, Florence, Katrin

Well done to all the athletes... a great set of performances.
Pity about the relay though..... IMO... I really feel the wrong decision was made for the W16 team. CW should certainly have gone first leg on that team!

Re: European Youth Champs
We arrived back from EYOC last night and I thought it would be useful to jot down a summary of results. I've included individual positions in the relay (based on time). What it highlights to me is the strength of this team with 4 runners getting top 10 placings.... (Jamie, Jonny, Charlotte and Florence (in relay)).
Long Relay Sprint
Top 10 0 3 2
Top 20 1 3 4
Top 30 4 5 6
Top 40 6 7 7
Top 50 9 11 9
Average 41.5 29.7 34
position
Number of runners who achieved
Top 10 4
Top 20 5
Top 30 9
Top 40 11
Top 50 12
The team really picked themselves up after the classic where to be perfectly honest many were incredibly disappointed and that was fantastic for us as coaches to see.
On the relay decision.... we are very aware that EYOC is a learning opportunity for all 12 athletes - we don't know at this stage who will make it in 10 years time. Because it is about helping all 12 of the athletes we chose not to make a first year 16 run up to an 18 class (for example) as we did not think it would necessarily help their long term development and instead chose the strongest runner to run up.... I am happy with our decision although I appreciate the point that the W16 and M16 teams would have been strengthened by having Jonny and Charlotte on the teams (but possibly at the expense of someone elses development). Although I have outlined the results above, they were certainly not at the heart of this experience.
