Mrs H, were you volunteering to design a new logo?

Design is not my forte but i think it badly needs doing. It's bad marketing to produce the same logo time after time (even if it were attractive) - I bought a t shirt back in 2000 - so why would i buy another one ?

If on the other hand you need any assistance with anything else then please don't hesitate to ask.

There are some occassions when using the same logo seems to work:

Mountain Marathons use the same logo (LAMM, SLMM and OMM) and sell loads of mementos.

Olympics don't do too badly either

Tyninghame Estate - Wooded and dune area between Gullane and North Berwick which is extended now and maybe has a different name, and had a Star Posts type large clearing with 13 tracks and rides converging on it. Used for an EUOC Badge event in 1975 and an event in 1977 organised by Gross and planned by Jethro.

If you mean between North Berwick and Dunbar, this map is still used for events by ELO and is called Binning Wood. It was last used for an event in March - see http://www.rstrain.ndtilda.co.uk/results_09/sosol9/ (with Routegadget link - the 13-track clearing is still there.)

Yes, that's it. What about the eastern section, i.e. a long 400 x 1500m strip of what was then mainly impenetrable woodland with a path at the side of it which led to the dunes? Is this still used now?

For longer courses at the Badge Event it meant a 1.5km leg to get to the dunes from Binning Wood, a few controls there, then a run along the beach to a few more followed by a 2km leg using the same path to return to Binning.

I've always remembered that run along the beach with massive breaking waves nearby, even if it was 34 years ago.

ELO tried to get permission to use more of Tyninghame Estate several years ago but got nowhere. Perhaps we should dust off the correspondence and try again.

Not so much a lost area - but a never used area
Someone once told me that SYO had mapped the woods to the west of Langsett Barn
- Can anyone confirm whether this is true or not, and if true will they ever be used?

No, we haven't yet mapped the woods west of Langsett Barn but you may know
that when we first looked at them in the early 1980's, they were not
mature enough and we decided to go with Cawthorne.

I checked things out a couple of years ago and ironically there's a large section (which can't be seen from the main roads) that has now been felled! And going round in summer, there was significant undergrowth in what was remaining. Also, it's not possible to get round the whole of the reservoir on water authority land and the best bits of woodland are adjacent to Midhope.

After speaking to a few locals when I was there, I was told of a suitable parking area other than at Langsett Barn (which is usually full of visitor cars), and given details of surrounding common and moorland owners.

I also rang up a now retired Barnsley land agent who you may remember, and he also gave me some useful info.

Can't really say much more on a searchable public forum relating to access and permissions but we are hoping to use the area. If there's anything else, give me a ring or email.

SYO member. I've noticed a number of permanent markers have recently appeared in the area so I assume that someone has mapped it. At least the bit around the main car park.
Unfortunately I also noticed horrendous undergrowth in most of the woods. You really need access to a large section of the moor to make it useable.

I don't know of anyone who's mapped it but were the markers on features other than paths?

If not they could be routes for walkers or cyclists and possibly used with an in-house produced plan of the area which is sold or given away at the Langsett Barn visitor centre.

I've seen these recently installed at a new area near Doncaster, but this is a 'community woodland' (a term I find patronising). They were wooden, about 1.5m high with a blue painted band round the top, but no code on so not for orienteering.

Is this what they're like at Langsett?

oh dear, you'd better not go orienteering at anagach then... dunno what it means in Yorkieland but up here it means a woodland owned and/or managed by the community...and not sure what exactly is patronising about that

At Langsett they are wooden, about 1.5m high with a plastic control symbol on one side and a code letter. All the ones I saw were on paths, but then I didn't fancy venturing off into the man-eating undergrowth!They were also all pretty close to the main car park. All the paths in that area have been recently re-engineered, with wheelchair friendly surfacing as well.

Coming back to the original thread about lost areas, WIM used to have access to the Hyde House estate near Wareham. There was an outdoor pursuits business operating out of the old house, and also a private golf club had been constructed in the estate woodlands.

The area we mapped was an interesting mixture of Golf course and woodland astride the River Piddle and incorporated three lakes formed from old gravel workings. Whilst it was not very technical it was useful for small events, schools leagues, novelty relays, night events etc. It would have made a good Trail-O area too.

Unfortunately, as the owner had never managed to get proper planning permission for the golf club he had built, it had to be a private members only club and so never really made enough money to make it pay.

Eventually the estate was put up for sale and was bought by a someone in the City who had just got a nice big fat bonus. His wife wasn't keen on having kids around the estate so the outdoor pursuits business was closed, as was the golf course. It was all fenced off, 'Private- Keep Out' notices appeared and the owner began trying to raise brown trout in the lakes to put into the Piddle so that his city mates could fish them out again for a big fat fee!

Tyninghame has a more pressing access problem - rhododendrons, lots of them. They are everywhere, and are gobbling up Binning too.

Further west - What happened to Duchray? The lovely oak wood in the middle of the Sitka grot south of Loch Ard. SNH?

As for rare birds in Strathspey forest, one of them appeared when I was hill bagging in one of them. They are there alright.

I have come across one permanent course, along with accompanying map, put up by some people in the Recreation Department of our local authority who had access to Ocad, but who were not orienteeers, although they had been to the odd mountain marathon and local midweek orineteering event!.

The map was poor (not registered with anybody); the posts were far too frequent. They were aimed at schoolchildren but were not well-placed. Indeed the area was rather limited in size, runnability and steepness for a POC; - although it has proved suitable for the odd orienteering "sprint" - a bit too physical to be ideal. Fortunately the schools this ill-advised venture was aimed at did not respond to the advertising.

I regularly encounter initiatives from assorted individuals in the same council's Parks Division, which we try and get a handle on to ensure that standards are acceptable and that they have access to a good standard of map.

I have heard of Yorkshire Water wanting to establish POCs. They at least approached our club, although to the best of my knowledge no courses were developed. The plan was for them to be displayed on the YW website - there's no mention of orienteering there. Re Langsett the YW site says; "The renovations to the site include new sign posts, information panels in the car park, new paths & easy access routes"

There appears to be some degree of interest in orienteering out there which does not come under the wing of British Orienteering.
