Re: "Lost" areas
This weekend we were discussing sizeable parts of the country where large events no longer seem to happen.
Years since I last noticed a Regional event anywhere in N Wales.
Ditto the West Pennines in Lancashire; Haslingden Grane, Winter Hill, Charters Moss, Tockholes, Pendle Hill etc - not brilliant areas - but where I cut my orienteering teeth.

SELOC 27th Sept 2009 Regional Event - Haslingden Grane.
Tockholes - had a NW night event there a year or so back and "local" events occasionally.

Rothemurchus gets my vote as the most staggeringly beautiful place in the whole of Britain to go for a run - I was there last weekend - it is as great as ever. However, I don't have a copy of an o-map, which I would find interesting for many reasons, not least for sussing out some areas for a possible sneaky stray. Does anyone have one they would like to send me?

Re: "Lost" areas
Regarding the TVOC areas - the owner of the Hampden estate "discovered"
in recent years that orienteering involves running off the path and doesn't like the idea very much. We have put on a few low key events there e.g. summer evening training events but it's unlikely there will be a larger event there in the foreseeable future. The Whiteleaf part (Cadsdean Glen) is owned separately and the owner has no problems with us going there, however it is too small for anything more than Green, and too physical for anything other than Blue upwards. (Only a slight exaggeration!)
If you want to orienteer on Great Hampden and Whiteleaf then keep an eye on the TVOC website for Saturday Series and Summer Series events. I have in mind to put on a Saturday Series event there next year, assuming the owner has not changed his mind about orienteering one way or the other, or the club has different plans.

as Green and Blue are both TD5 and should be physically similar if different distances sounds like an event with Short Green, Green and Short Blue (perhaps) might be fun -but as I've never been there I couldn't really say......
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Re: "Lost" areas
More suitable for hill reps than a Green course methinks - a great little area for the summer series, which stimulated some great debate over straight up and long way round this year. Moreover, some of the JOK/OUOC guys went out and ran all the route choices on the long leg!
hop fat boy, hop!

Re: "Lost" areas
I've just come back from a few days in the hills and valleys behind Aberystwyth and was amazed at how beautiful and unusual the scenery is - parts like high alpine meadows - parts like compact Scottish highlands and better than parts of the Lakes - fascinating industrial archaeology - and yet there is no one there. I'm really excitied to hear that Croeso 2012 is likely to be held in the area - it's an absolute gem

Don't know where you went, Mrs H, but if you went where I went when visiting and assessing potential areas recently, I agree with you 100%. Croeso 2012 has the potential to be an absolute classic multi-day event, with not a grotty Welsh area in sight!
Provisional dates are 21st to 28th July (to avoid clash with Olympics), so pencil these in now

Re: "Lost" areas
I definitely will - do you think it would be a good time to introduce a new Croeso logo? I'm not buying anything with that ugly pot-bellied person and his pot-bellied dragon on - now something with a nice red kite(it even sounds like it's got something to do with orienteering) and i might ne tempted to part with my money

Re: "Lost" areas
A few of you will recently have done the twin peaks above Ullswater.
Now about a year ago that was being listed as taking place on Moel y Dyniewyd and so I put it down as a "must do" in the diary. After a few months the area changed and so I scrubbed the diary entry
Moel y Dyniewyd - JK1984 - truly great area, but is that a lost one too?

Drop me a pm if you want a copy of the Strathspey 95 map.

Re: "Lost" areas
The last Croeso didn't have a single grotty Welsh forest either, in fact only one forest (really nice) and some great open areas.
However it sounds as though Mid Wales may have a rather more aesthetic surrounding area away from the South Wales ex industrial valleys. So it will be a must.

Agree with David and Mrs H that Croeso 2012 should be awesome. If things go to plan, Great areas, event centre with plenty of affordable accommodation, plenty of clean sandy beaches to keep the kids happy and a great mix of events.
Mrs H, were you volunteering to design a new logo?

Re: "Lost" areas
Anybody know whether these areas have ever been used since the 1970's? Can't say I've ever seen them in fixture lists in recent times.
Hack Fall - North of Ripon, adjacent to Nutwith and used by AIRE for a Score event in 1972
Brantingham Dale - Humberside area north of Brough which had an event in 1973
Stang Forest - Large area South of Barnard Castle which had a Badge event in 1973. Vaguely recall something about it either being used recently or is going to be.
And 3 areas first mapped by EUOC.
Sheardale Wood - SW of Dollar and used a couple of times by EUOC, the last of which I organised in 1976
Tyninghame Estate - Wooded and dune area between Gullane and North Berwick which is extended now and maybe has a different name, and had a Star Posts type large clearing with 13 tracks and rides converging on it. Used for an EUOC Badge event in 1975 and an event in 1977 organised by Gross and planned by Jethro.
The Forest - East of Alloa and used for the 1976 BUSF Relays and an event in 1977 which Jethro organised and Gross planned!
My club has an area, Rockley, which was used once with a new 5-colour map in 1978. It's the first wooded area on the left going north from M1 J36. It's largest sections are like mini-Tankersleys and SYO had a summer mid-week evening event there at which nearly 150 people attended. I had a look at it a few years ago and found there was no chance of using it again as it was now owned by a shooting syndicate.
