Who ever decides the dates for BOC has so many weekends to choose from, yet they put the British Champs on the same weekend as the Tio Mila. It is the one weekend which shouldn't clash, The only important race of spring.
Well done guys, good work.

... and they just started cheap flights to Tiomila from Edinburgh
.
When it comes down to it, a big event like BOC doesn't have much scope to move and Tio only affects a dozen or so people (mainly elites, and its a serious (i.e. pressure!) race for only two or three): maybe you should lobby to move BEOC to a separate event ...
2010
April 2-4 JK
17-18 British Championships (short middle)
1st May British Championships (long) / Tiomila
In the JK thread you (rightly) argued that running two long races on consecutive weekends meant you couldn't take both seriously. BO wont countenance June, March is out of season, so this appears to leave them with May as the only time.

Which one is the only important race of the Spring? Tio Mila or BOC? Presume you mean Tio Mila

Then it doesn't clash does it - there is no choice. It doesn't matter what else is on at the same time

Re: BOC / TioMila 2010
The TioMila is the important race, but many people in our team may be "obliged" to run BOC as a selection race. that is the only way BOF can get elites to run their races because no one would run a long race on Cannock for the challenge.
Tio dates come out years before BOC, and BOC dates come out a year before all the litte races on the surrounding weekend. BOC isn't like JK where it is pinned to bank holidays

Re: BOC / TioMila 2010
From the BOF guidelines...
The event should normally be held in late spring or early summer
in order to fit in with the overall elite orienteering schedule. The
British Orienteering policy is to integrate the British Elite
Orienteering Championships Long Distance race with the British
Orienteering Championships unless there is a good reason not to,
e.g. unsuitability of date or area.

Well perhaps you can influence some quango or another to prove that the BOC date is infact detrimental to the welfare of some rare species - Marcus complainus
It's a well known tactic.

They should move BOC to February - that would solve the problem and keep the elites happy.

Oh....
My money is on the event being moved/postponed/cancelled due to the disease Phytophthora ramorum on Cannock Chase.

Re: BOC / TioMila 2010
Even if British Elites is moved to another weekend, Tiomila will still clash with the British relay champs which is a real shame. Might not affect most people, but I suspect the men's and women's open relays might suffer considerably. Looking at the fields from the last few years, you can probably expect 50-75% of the medallists to be in Sweden instead

Have I missed something? The latest Fixtures group minutes, from March, indicate that BOC (long) is on 1st May, but BEOC (long) is still only provisional ("TBC") for that date.
If BEOC is now that weekend then someone at the elite level has indicated fairly recently that the date is acceptable - in which case any criticism shouldn't be addressed at Fixtures but elsewhere. And if it isn't then there isn't a major clash for elites so it's a non-issue.
However gg makes a fair point about the relays.

Events Committee and Major Events minutes from a couple of weekends ago are on the BOF website (not sure when they appeared). They confirm that BEOC 2010 will be on the TioMila weekend, but that because of the clash it won't be used for selection.

What's wrong with Cannock? Many of our best orienteers started out on Cannock Chase.
