Here's the situation with MTBO and BOF as I understand it.

MTBO is moving away from the TCA due to Trailquest'ers not being interested as they feel the sport encroaches on their turf! Maps for Trailquest are not to MTBO spec. but use OS maps. To find the SI unit the technique of 'getting to the circle having a hunt about, a bit of swearing and cursing at why you attending this race, read the descriptions, check the map, and finally find the control', is often used!

BOF/TCA provide £2000 per year to the entire team (i'm not sure who this money is from) which just about covers entry fees to WOC/ EOC/ JWOC.

I have not been informed by anyone at BOF about a special squad fund, but was instead told to use TASS, which for me, ran out of money at the end of March, but covered my races until the beginning of May. The TASS hardship grant has changed this year, so I can no longer apply for competition reasons, but instead for living and educational expenses, which effectively puts me out of the picture.

Anyone competing at the MTBO Long event next Saturday can hand their donations in to me at registration and I will make sure that your contributions, as well as mine, get passed on to Emily.

As a member of the GB Trail-O squad, I'm quite used to the concept of self-funding trips to international events so I have every sympathy with Emily's problems.

Meanwhile, keep the entries (and the contributions) coming in.

Hi everyone,

Firstly, I am astounded by the generosity of people on this forum, so thank you all, but I didn't write what I wrote as a means to get money! I was making a point about the status of MTBO within British Orienteering. As grateful as I am to see so many people willing to support, I am not comfortable taking money from you. I am sure things will sort themselves out!

Secondly, 6 out of 8 weekends was a hell of lot of travelling. I got back from a training camp in Italy 2 weeks ago and was absolutely shattered....but... I have three top 5 places at WRE's and finished 5th overall in the Denmark training camp league (all races at W21E level). I had a chat with Mr Compass Sport earlier, who mentioned that some people my see all these races as a misuse of TASS money. Last year I underperformed at my major races because before JWOC 08 I had done a grand total of 2 MTBO races in 2008. I made the decision in November to commit 110% to MTBO this year, no Orienteering, no Coaching, no summer tours, nothing! Instead I have put everything I have into MTBO because I really believe I can do well this year. By going to international races I have learnt to race against the best, developed a pre-race plan, I know what works for me and what doesn't, and I can go to Denmark being the best physically, technically and mentally that I have ever been. WIthout the World Ranking events I would be far from this and can now confidently compete against the best juniors in the world. It is a totally different mind game knowing that you can out perform people at a race compared to going for a top 20 result. You either win...or lose. At the end of June, if I do well, then spending £9K was well worth it. If I lose, I can say I did my best.
