Didn't take long to find my results from the 6 day in 2001 and a couple of National Events in 2002.

Rumour has it that the new BOF results database will be upon us shortly (although as far as I know it's not going to include an archive of past events).

It can't be beyond modern technology to scan past results (at least for the British and JK) into the database. As far as I am aware printed results have always been offered and so must exist in some numbers, starting with Terry Dooris's paper archive.

I;m sure there are plenty of horders out there who will have a huge bac catalogue of results. Compass-sport/The orienteer is probably a good shout too

My understanding is as follows:
1. A beta version of the new results system should be available for testing very soon and, when bugs have been ironed out, should be the main repository for event results. The system will then be developed to be compatible with the new "single scale" rankings algorithm so that "new" rankings points are calculated and displayed on the fly when results are entered.
2. Results from many past events are available in various parts of the BOF system, and these will be entered too. Those in the existing rankings database(s) are prime candidates for this but a problem regarding changed BOF numbers may need to be resolved first.
3. No doubt there will be gaps in the records for recent events. Anyone who has electronic copies of these results will be encouraged to resubmit them for archival reasons. Validation issues need to be addressed here.
4. It would be good to build up as complete a record as possible of top events such as past JKs and BOCs but, in many cases, results only exist in paper form. In theory it should be possible to scan/OCR these and knock them into suitable shape for submission to the database and I guess that volunteers to take on this labour of love may be wanted ...
There's a lot of work to be done!

Thanks,
If you pm me an email address I can send you the condes file for 2008.
I also have the event files and could generate a new set of results if the originals are indeed lost.

Re: British Relays 2008 (Culbin) course lengths
I had some discussions a few moths back about an archive of Scottish results to be stored on the SOA website. Discussion points were:
What format?
There are several event management applications out there producing a variety of formats, plus the hand typed ones.
What levels of event to store?
Do you just keep the new level 1 & 2, what happens if the number of levels / terminology change?
What level of information to be kept?
Individual splits, course information, terrain description...
If you want to be able of make use of the information for future planning assistance you need all the above. I had suggested that the map (Ocad) & course file (Condes) could be stored with the results, but it was felt that would not be acceptable to people. I tend to think we are over protective about making such files available and don't see why sharing them is so bad.
Who is going to maintain it?
The initial setting up is bad enough but someone needs to be looking out for and chasing up event results every week. This could be a time consuming exercise, and a duplication of effort if the British Orienteering website is doing the same thing (although they may not want the same things).
Too many questions and not enough answers yet.

Re: British Relays 2008 (Culbin) course lengths
As far as BOC and JK results are concerned, it would be easier to access previous results if the URLs didn't change every year. This year we have http://www.boc2009.org.uk and http://www.jk2009.org.uk, I doubt anyone will pay to maintain those domains. Why don't we follow the Swedish example - the Oringen web site is http://www.oringen.se permanently, so all the results (and future event details) are in one place? I know this would only work for the big named events, but it's a start and not really much effort.

The JK website was actually hosted on the BOF site though. Even when http://www.jk2009.org.uk is no longer there, the site can still be found at http://jk2009.britishorienteering.org.uk. Plus, the results are hosted on the SI website, not the JK one.

Not posting results on the event website seems a little stupid to me.....

Re: British Relays 2008 (Culbin) course lengths
Worth pointing out that the original purpose of this thread was a planner needed to know course lengths and times from past events so he could calculate reqd course lengths for the evenet he was planning
Since BOF guidelines give reccd course lengths as ratios of the M21E/L length he only really needs the details of the M21E course, a map (to assess how tough the course was and check the area mapped) and the results of that one class would be all the info he needed for most events
Also he really only needs the most recent event in the area
prioritising the above might save some work
