Just noticed Britain's best ever orienteer has decided to retire from international races.
It's amazing when you actually think about what Jamies achieved and all the medals he's won. A truely great athlete and perhaps the greatest we'll ever have.
I was lucky enough to be there on the day Jamie became World Champion in Switzerland, and it's certainly one of my best memories I've got from orienteering.
When he won the World Championships he also provided me with a good story to tell.
As Jamie was living in Gothenburg in the 6 months prior to the WOC in Switzerland I spent a fair bit of time with him. There's no doubt at all in my mind he was the best prepared runner going in to that sprint race. One of his final bits of preperation, just before he flew to Switzerland, was to come over to my house and watch the Chariots of Fire film. Now if you ever need the motivation to suceed and a few words of wisdom that film will provide it. Jamie definatly got a kick out of the film as we talked a fair bit about it just before WOC.
Eventually the the amazing day came, Jamie won, became World Champion, and as he was due to get his medal they started playing the theme tune to Chariots of Fire across the whole of the city. I guess some things are just meant to be.......

Jamie Steveson - he was a fantastic orienteer to race with and to coach. I wish him and Helena the best possible future.
