IE8 and BOF Event Info page
Anyone using Internet Explorer 8? It seems to struggle with the "cancelled events" tickertape on the BOF Event Information page. I've tried it on a couple of PCs; it's rather jerky and the CPU utilisation for iexplore.exe leaps to 50% or more. No problem with IE7 or Firefox, and other BOF pages seem OK with IE8.

It has exactly the same effect on Firefox 3. Sounds like a badly written bit of javascript to me.

Re: IE8 and BOF Event Info page
I normally use Firefox, and the BOF pages work fine, albeit a little slowly because of the massive navigation headers. As I've commented before, this makes the site inaccessible to dial-up users. This apart, I really like the Events pages, and the cancelled scroll message works fine.
However, you've prompted me to try in Internet Explorer. I'm running version 7, and the site is completely unusable in this because the navigation headers don't work - no text displayed in the bubbles, and they're not selectable.

Ian - if you don't normally use IE, are you sure you have up-to-date Shockwave/Flash and Java plugins installed for that browser? (Visit those links using IE to check.) Using sufficiently old versions could cause the navigation header to break.

Thanks Scott, your diagnosis is largely correct. Also, my security settings were too high.
Reminds me of one of the reasons why I prefer Firefox to IE, it tells me when it's blocked something, rather than leaving me in the dark.
Anyway, the Events pages are now working on IE for me. Although not the "Quotes" button on this forum, I've had to go back to Firefox to post this.

I've upgraded to IE8 and get the same problem with CPU usage when the Event Information page is displayed. And I get a similar problem with Firefox too, although "only" about 40% CPU is gobbled up.
Have you reported this to the BOF webmaster?

I thought I'd upgrade to IE8 to see what all the fuss was about, but now my LAN connection in Vista appears to be well and truly broken
- bloody Microsoft. I've switched to Ubuntu (and Firefox) until I have time to figure out what's gone wrong...

Re: IE8 and BOF Event Info page
I forwarded another IE8 bug to the webmaster last October - that anchors to items lower down on the same page didn't work, e.g. those on http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/downloads/about.php#rules. I don't know if these have been sorted since then as I uninstalled IE8 after that.
Unless this has been done already, I suggest that all such bugs are made known to the webmaster asap via info@britishorienteering.org.uk
