Re: BUCS 2009
Delighted to see Oxford challenging the EUOC/SHUOC duopoly. They even seemed to have some counting people who started orienteering at university - now there's a challenge for EUOC.
Coming soon

Re: BUCS 2009
Why?
BUCS (aka BUSA) is the British Univeristy Championships, it is about getting results and points for your university. Stop trying to drag it down with your pathetic british orienteer attitudes. Do Loughborough turn up to the Athletics champs to take part?
Looking back, most of our scoreres ofer the past 5 or so years have been either GBR or home nation interntationals, or on BOF tours. I very much doubt anyone who starts orienteering at uni is ever going to challenge that.

I beg to differ as I believe the winner of the women's race (Ali Crocker) is an example of someone who only started orienteering in Oxford.

Re: BUCS 2009
Whats the deal with the 2 different courses in the results for MENS A, am I missing something here?
Also how come the quality of competition has become so weak. Scott won with 6 minutes over a 50min course, with the 4th best over 10 mins behind. Even if Scott is a world class runner, there surely should more runners packing in 5 mins down. Maybe it's early season and no one really cares?

Re: BUCS 2009
Every single scorer in the last 8 years has been orienteering before uni. We're an undergraduate club. In the last 5 years I can only name 2 postgrads. So as I said, I very much doubt anyone who starts orientering at Edinburgh will make our top 3.

Re: BUCS 2009
I think Pippa started O at Uni so you can become World Class from Uni. I think Mharki that perhaps Edinburgh might like to rethink it's elitism because there will come a time when it isn't O that is critical in Uni choice for top orienteers, they are already beginning to spread their talents round and thats a good thing for O. I noted that Bangor Uni had a team at the British Champs, Bristol are building a team, Durham have re-emmerged and Inperial College were at BUCS I think without a 'big' name amongst them. Sheffield have developed a new strategy as their elite have moved on and despite a sprinkling of 'big names' they took a team consisting of a number of people new to the sport or new to mainstream O.
I say keep it up to these O clubs, this is good for the sport

Possibly Scott is currently the only runner of his calibre who happens to be a student at a British university.

IIRC, Ali did her first "proper" orienteering event sometime in January 2007, with OUOC.
