Jobs for All!

Blimey - I've only been out of the country for five days and there are another 4 jobs advertised on the BOF website - that takes the total to about 6 or 7 this year

Are these old jobs - in which case why are people resigning at such a rate?

Or are they new posts - in which case how did we manage before them?

I guess they are being paid for by some mystical pot of money from some central funding body (ie not us - or not us directly anyway) so I guess that's a good thing but as the number of paid jobs in the sport rises it will be interesting to see what impact they have on the volunteer sector.

I sometimes wonder whether the advent of paid development officers made volunteers pull back from the task a little with an element of:"Why should i do it when they are being paid?" - or even - "why should I do their job for them?"

Anyone got any thoughts on the matter.

Not obvious, but I think its only two jobs. National Coach and Talent manager.

Don't really understand it. Seems a bit odd that British OF couldn't coordinate a UK-wide Talent and Participation Project - looks like Steve and Gareth will be concentrating their work in one part of the country only.

Hopefully, they'll concentrate efforts on what our volunteers (like me) have proved rubbish at down the years* - effective publicity - rather than the technical stuff that we're quite good at.

*e.g. People think getting 100 people along is incredible: and by our standards it is, but that's what we routinely see for events from coffee mornings to rubber duck races.

Isn't Steve's post solely funded by Sport England? In which case, it's not really that odd that they require him to work with English clubs - though I'd imagine any resources/guidance/etc he produces - including any publicity material or advice - will be available to all. And my understanding is that Gareth's position is joint funded by UK Sport and Sport England - presumably this project is fulfilling the Sport England side of his role. The UK Sport side of things - essentially, running the international programme - will obviously still be UK-wide.

Those two jobs are being advertised again - hasn't anyone applied for them?

seems like the sort of jobs where people should be head hunted, rather than advertised on the NGB website...

Head hunting is not cheep so an advert on the web site is very cheap and lets people know what is going on. If no one can be found soon then you have to consider other options...

Any government funded job will have to be publicly advertised: BOF website is likely the best/cheapest way. Doesn't preclude headhunting, which is likely to be more productive in practice: I guess Mike Hamilton didn't phone you yet Mharky?
