Sadly and much to my surprise a final inspection of the area has shown the car parking area for day 1 to be unsafe due to snow and ice from the recent bad weather.
After consultation with the controller I have taken the decision to cancel the event.
Following consultation with WOA it has also been decided to cancel day 2.
SWOC will be investigating options for rescheduling the weekend and I will contact you all again on any rescheduling and/or refund arrangements.
I am extremely sorry that I've had to make this decision and I hope you will all understand how difficult it was.

But the weather forecast is quite mild and snow goes fast. With over 24 hours to go I hope this isn't another JK whenever it was.

Eddie
Just remember what the parking was like in the summer when we went there - we parked in deep mud and water then and I cannot remember the car being in such a state for a long time at an event!
We are lucky on Sunday with having a school for our assembly area with indoor changing, showers, toilets - registration and download inside and hard standing for parking. Also only 100 metres off the main Poole to Wareham road which we know gets gritted as a priority! Hence we are in a position to continue. Forest is lovely and pretty dry but if we has been using local fields we would have been in a mess.
Hence our reason for re-opening entry to allow those who unfortunately are not as lucky to have the opportunity of a good event in a nice orienteering area.

Have either of you been to the car park area over the last few days? NO. Why were you not making such crass comments about all the other events that have been cancelled recently. Christ this forum is such a load of jobbie thesedays, I'm off back to the FRA forum for some interesting, positive discussions.
And as a parting comment, I controlled the car parking at CROESO at Wentwood and again parking would have been on forest roads this weekend, ungritted, rutted, rough tracks, so I have some understanding of the problems of parking cars at Wentwood. Nyall is an experienced orienteer and would not have cancelled Wales' premier event if he had not deemed the area unaccessible by car.

How's the snow on the Lickeys compared to Clent - should I take my skis?
I wonder whether there will be a significant increase in numbers for that given the Welsh cancellation?

I really don't wish to be critical, and I don't know the situation there. It simply struck me as odd to cancel the event so early with a warming weather forecast.
I remember arriving at an assembly field one Saturday, the day before a badge event. There was about a foot of snow everyehere but I managed to persuade them not to cancel. Just as well as come the next day there was not a trace of the snow left. I am not saying this is likely to happen here as I don't know what the situation is now, but I do know that snow can disappear very rapidly.

I too have been put off by the entry fee especially as there will be a guaranteed entry with FCC, Southern Champs and Interland. The only reason I will be going is because it's a "National" and my lad wants to attend "Nationals" to get championship pts - if it wasn't a National we would not be going and as it is it will only be me and the lad, wife and daughter not going - to expensive. Oh and of course there's the obligatory No dogs rule which has been applied - I tell you - I'll be looking out for flocks of sheep or herds of deer in the car park in Beaconsfield. I haven't entered yet and may just enter the lad and take my old BB map and go for a run around the woods - keep raising the prices lads, I'll make my protest by not entering and go run/climb up a mountain for free.
now here are crass comments about someone else's event
