Thanks for all the comments (I've written them down to take on board for next year!), I'm glad you all enjoyed your weekend.

Regarding the Sunday event, I had a few conversations with different people yesterday about the possibility of using a different area. Arthur's Seat is an obvious choice being in the city centre, but we realise that to keep attracting competitors to come back we need to make it exciting. There are a few possibilities, but will have to think hard!

As for the street race...I'm sure Graeme would love to do more mapping , so there's plenty of scope for different and exciting courses.

Indeed. I absolutely KNOW there was a way through that gorse patch last year .

It got to the point last year that I mapped the Grassmarket, went and had a coffee, came back out and had to re-map it...

But they've finished all that now... oh, wait, no. They have to start over again because it isn't friendly enough to people in wheelchairs... unlike all those other streets in Edinburgh.

It's just going to be a case of planning the coureses and then doing map corrections for the race "corridor".

Got back late last night after what I reflected on as being the best use of a January weekend in the GB I could imagine - a very big thank you to everyone involved.

On Monday (in yet more glorious sunshine) Mr H and I caught the airport bus and got off past Haymarket, We walked along the disused railway line to the river and along the river taking in the Gallery of Modern Art and the Botanic Gardens - we remarked on what a fantastic contrasting bit of the city this was - various levels - complicated streets - open space - and always the constraint of the river crossings - in other words an excellent area for urban racing.

Is it mapped or are there any plans to map it? The Airport bus gives easy, cheap and regular access to the area from the city centre.

I now have all of South Edinburgh between the Royal Mile and Frogstone Road mapped, in a mix of ISOM, ISSOM and the "urban standard" I invented before ISSOM came out. Godders has even more. I'd like to add Princes St Gardens and Calton Hill (ESOC maps) to create an even bigger area which all three clubs could use (observant people will have noticed I stick my own copyright on rather than INT).

The drawback is more the coordinated putting-on of events than getting maps.

No I wasn't advocating running around the Botanic Gardens as i realised that might be a bit difficult to organise (or i might have suggested that rather interesting land sculpture in the grounds of the Gallery of Modern Art as a good control site) I merely mentioned them so you knew where i'd been - I was talking about the areas either side of the river which looked terrific.

It would be a shame if inter club rivalry prevented it being used. In MADO we thrive on interclub co-operation as what's good for the sport is good for everyone no matter which club they belong to.

I don't see that happening, ESOC are trying to push for more 'urban' type maps/areas at the moment so if some 'megamap' arrangement can be reached it's going to benefit all orienteering in the city

Nope, me neither, as it is we get a lot of help from the other clubs to put on our weekend of events (couldn't do it without them!) and we're all friendly

Just to say thankyou to everyone involved in the weekend, it's a real treat. The competition in the W40+ was hot as per usual with half a dozen within the same minute on the street race. Stalls have been well and truly set out for the new league! Great races, packed ceilidh, bit of culture, chance to catch up with daughter and a tacky fridge magnet of the castle - so what if the train went backwards on the way back to Yorkshire!
