Re: Services to Orienteering
yep thats exactly who I thought of as well - Gross has done loads for orienteering, if anyone deserves a prize he does.
I'd also nominate Jason Inman, coach of the junior team for what must be about 13 years is mightly impressive.

Re: Services to Orienteering
Extract from the Development Committee minutes:
Service Awards (to the sport of orienteering)
The discussion ranged through ideas from existing club, regional and British Orienteering awards. Whilst it was agreed that there is much good practice at club and association level, it was agreed that there should be national recognition of long and excellent service by volunteers to the sport. Using the BSOA awards for Service to Schools Orienteering and Outstanding Service to Schools Orienteering as a model, it was agreed that Development Committee should set up a system for nominations to be received and for a panel to consider the nominations and for the provision of money from the British Orienteering Development Fund to award specially designed, printed and framed certificates to those who are chosen by the panel. Those who receive the award would be named on a Roll of Honour on the web site and this would be added to each year. Nominations would be requested at the year end and awards of up to 50 could be made as appropriate.

Re: Services to Orienteering
Whilst recognizing the work volunteers do is worthy, what about the time and effort required by another bunch of volunteers that will be required to sit on the panel and judge the nominations?
Who will decide on who is eligible to be a judge?
I can't help but feel that their time could be used to better effect. They could be planning, organizing, mapping, coaching, maintaining websites etc. and this would benefit more orienteers and improve the sport.

I can't help but feel that planners, organisers, mappers, coaches and webmasters time could be better used fighting world poverty, famine and the dying environment...

Send the nominations to me, I'll quite happily read them all and decide on a winner.

Has Pyrat built in a script that bans all positive comments from being posted?

Note the fact that volunteers, the very people that our sport relies on, are being celebrated! Go and nominate some worthy people, whoever, for whatever reasons - there are loads of them out there.

Mrs H - The Silva award can only go to one person a year... as you'll agree there are far more worthy recipients of it than could ever be recognised. With up to fifty awards each year, this is how we hope to do so.

Distracted - I assume you're helping to organise this?
If so, you might want to see if you can get the publicity on the website change. No where does it say there could be 50 awards per year. Perhaps you could get that fact put in the headline section. My first impression was that this was a one person award and thereforeorienteers I know in my little corner of the sport would have little chance of winning it. If it's 50 then I'll fill in a form before the deadline.

Re: Services to Orienteering
SeanC - good comment i'll see if something can be done to get it changed. 50 is also a guidance number dependent on quality and quantity of the nominations
