Just entered JK and think I need a bank loan!
Looking at the M21/W21 topic, don't think we will get any returnees,newbies at JK with colour coded at £17 a day on the cheapest entry ie by 31/01/09. OK, I know JK is a premier event and it's aim is not to encourage newcomers so it has definitely met its aim there.
Just thought, will colour coded entries on the day have to pay the £2 surcharge on the at least (March closing date) £22 entry fee if they can't produce a BOF card

A clubmate who doesn't post on Nopesport asked me to put the following point, which, although not specifically referring to the JK and Level 1 events, does raise the issue of newcomers and casual orienteers being forced to pay substantially more than they have had to under the old structure:

'One concern with the so called super colour code events replacing regionals is the cost of eod for casual orienteerings or those that haven't booked and fancy a run on the day. Here's an example: at present most regionals allow eod white to light green courses. I can book one of these say the light green for something like 5 quid. If I had entered that course as a regional pre-entry this would have cost say 8-9 quid almost double! If I understand the new structure correctly I will no longer be able to get this course for the cheaper price thus discriminating against new comers and people not having the confidence to run in the regional age classes. These are arguably essential to the survival of orienteering. Has this been missed from the new structure?'

Level 1/2 events are meant to be quality events and so most people would expect to pay for that. However a club can still put on cheap EOD courses if they wish. GO are doing this for their event in Feb and advertising them as Beginner's courses.

Our membership secretary has a list of about 10 families who have contacted him in the past year or so to say they want to try the sport. He tells me that what's put them off doing so has been the limited availability of local events - and what they consider local is more local than many orienteers consider local. The frequency is also important due to the inevitable clashes with Tarquin's birthday party/Grandma visiting blah blah. The price at the 1 regional event per year within travelling distance of these families therefore seems a very minor part of the problem - though I like GO's idea.

Please note that there has been no increase in prices for JK 2009 as against JK 2008 and as an organising committee we are not out to make any profit over and above what we are compelled to do (or asked to do?) under British Orienteering's policies.

I don't see anywhere in the system that requires clubs to charge more. Charging structures are completely up to the clubs. For instance, we certainly anticipate some of our L2s being cheaper than others. Why not charge cheaper rates on, say, TD3 and lower courses?

Please tell me I've misread the information but it looks to me from the JK website that I pay £15 for my M60 run and my wife pays £17 for a yellow toddle. Shurely shome mishtake?

Just been onto the JK website,

Full BOF member on M21E is £2 cheaper than a full BOF member on the white course... interesting...

Why is the Sprint race half the price??? Are we paying for the distance we run, or what? Surely is costs just as much to organise a sprint race as a classic. Infact, probably more as a new map is needed, whereas the Sunday will only have had an update.

There is very little forest in common beween Saturday and Sunday - the area has been extended and some of it has never been used for orienteering (but it has been for rock climbing)

From my last visit to the area VHI a few years ago, Kyloe, used for the individual was very tough but enjoyable - should be less tough in Spring.

The relay went through some fantastic runnable terrain with enormous rock features - not really like anywhere I can think of elsewhere in the UK. That area however was not mapped anywhere near the required standard for JK so a big mapping budget there I suspect.

I planned the VHI and can confirm it is more pleasant (and more runnable) earlier in the year! In addition to rock pillars the Day 3 area features crags with routes up to E9. Hopefully Chris and Karen will make you run around the side of these....

We made a mistake and it was our stated policy not to increase prices. The Entries website will be amended as soon as possible and anyone who has been overcharged will get a refund.

Keep those entries coming in - there's a lot of hard work goes into an event like this so we appreciate seeing these early entrants.
