Just got back from Aire's sprint race round Lister Park in Bradford. Premarked ISOM 1:5000 map, e-punching etc. Aside from a couple of goes at things like Coaching Conference, this was my first go at this, and it was brilliant. Fast, furious, knackering, absolutely ideal for summer events in Britain when the vegetation makes so many forests seriously unpleasant. It was also good to be able to run in the same race as some of these fast M21s, compare (ignominiously) against them, but still run a reasonable length of time. I really enjoyed the micro-route choice decisions too. And whilst there wasn't a great drive on publicity, having the O-banners and presence on a sunny afternoon in such a public spot can't have done the sport any harm. It also seemed to go down really well with the juniors there.
All in all, this sort of orienteering deserves to suceed. I just hope more 'grassroots' orienteers latch on, and more clubs try and do this properly.

as one of "those faste m21's" i thought i'd comment on this. completely agree with andy in that this event was great. 2 courses available, reduced rate if you ran both courses. ideal technique work as micro-route choices really made a difference, and with a few fast people there it made you race right to the line (no sarcastic comments on the sprint finish Niall). and as far as i know, no controls were nicked, a nice surprise with electronic punching in a very public place on a very nice day.
and just to add to this, the whole Yorkshire region is actually having a park race series, with each open club in the region putting on an event between now and June - would definitely recommend the York City Centre park race on the May bank holiday, guaranteed to be some banter as you race through the streets! and speaking of banter, tommy chesters got a whole load of encouragement from some Spurs fans as he raced through the park in his Spurs top. how can you fail to go fast when people are cheering "Do it for Spurs!"

The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

No, although one did go missing for a minute or two, without anybody being affected. There was a team of 4-5 patrollers out throughout, linked to the organiser by mobile phone. That number was far more effective than it might sound given the small actual area covered by the courses.

Bring on York lads - and remember it is the finish that counts. Congrats to AIRE for putting a great event. It was excellent to have 2 races finished before 12.00 in the afternoon. And by the way for those reading these posts, i, Niall, did for the first time this year manage to beat speedy Nixon on the run in! Go on- 'ave it! No doubt Ian you won't be missing fumbling at the finish control next time!

glad you enjoyed the race guys, unfortunately i missed it by about 7 hours - it was advertised on the BOF website and in compass sport as starts from 1700 - 1800.... i wasn't the only one who was caught out, some guy called steve travelled all the way from york. we walked around the park like a couple of idiots wandering where all the controls were...
Anyone from Aire care to comment on this?

Well I'm not from AIRE but the BOF Fixtures page, updated 22/4/2004, has the following to say:
and from the definitive guide, the AIRE website:

yeah well bill gates just wants everyone to buy his software and not other peoples. he wants world domination. we decided to rebel and get a mac. its great. then when it came to getting another computer we ended up getting a PC because there's so many programmes you can't run on macs.

Have to agree with Brooner here, get extremely [nope]d off when event details are in Word, even though I have Win-doze. Even if they can't be bothered to write the web-page, there are enough programs out there that generate PDF files nowadays that these people don't have an excuse.
[nope]ing Microsoft...
Helen: there are alternatives, you just have to find them. Linux is a great operating system, and Mozilla is a "proper" browser, unlike IE. Just a shame that some hardware doesn't come with drivers for Linux...

Macs and Word
after 6 years of having to send attachments from our Mac in rtf and still finding that people couldn't open them, caved in last year and got student version of Office:mac courtesy of having two kids. Use it for the attachments; forget about it and enjoy the Mac the rest of the time.
Here at the greatest track junction in the UK we need park races. Any park race organisers on nopesport who want to drop some keys to success off at my door are welcome to a cup of tea and a biscuit (and a play on the Mac)

people who aren't entirely computer literate probably have enough trouble producing event details in word and don't realise that there are other ways to do it. microsoft are only trying to make money . . .and being a lot more successful than most people!
