Hi Mrs H.
Thank you for your efforts to ensure that there was coverage of the event. Welcome to the BOF where voluntary effort immediately get slagged off.
I actually thought your original report was fine - it was a news report about the better performances, which happened to come from the English team. If any of the Scottish juniors do get a good result, I'm sure they will be reported on, and they would be listed as part of the Scottish team, not the British as one poster implied. Just because someone is there, doesn't necessarily mean that every report on the event should include them.

Well I think I should have mentioned them probably to start with - but i thought it would sound a bit patronising - and looking at the piece now I think it does look tht way - it's a bit of a no win situation I'm afraid

As an official of the BSOA, I'd like to point out that BSOA is supporting the Scottish team(not financially) but encouraging them to get a foothold in this competition so they can expand their participation in future year.
However Mrs H 's article was a news article soit was correctly pitched. The news was of English success. It's just like the Times printing the JK results, they put in the elites, they didn't mention that I also took part and came n'th on my short course. I didn't take offence but I might have if the internet results stopped at n-1th place

Me said in the junior forum back in January:
What am I meant to make of that? there is absolutely no mention of the team or even the competition on the Scottish association web site. I agree I should have mentioned that a Scottish team was in attendance but the only information available about the team is quoted above. To expand on the fact that they are there ( there is no information available as to whether this is their first time) would be tokenism - is that what you want? - If anyone has any further information available then send it to Sophie - or even me - and I will incorporate it into the story I shall file after the middle distance race today - I simply cannot say fairer than that
PS and before anyone reads into the Guests comments that the BSOA are financially supporting the English team - tell that to the parents who have forked out £500 to send their kids on an 8 day trip to Belgium and no the guest wasn't me I have no connection with the BSOA except for providing genetic material
They are taking a team of about 5 guys from
a random school somewhere who have never
orienteered before.
The guy who is organising it asked Maureen if
anyone in the Scottish Junior Squad wanted to go
but she never told anyone in the Squad which is
why the team is made up of five random guys and
not of anyone who can actually orienteer.]

encouraging them
great encouragement!
It's just like the Times printing
Yes, just like it. Although i'm sure I have read articles in search (or whatever that pointless BSOA sectiong of RC5 is) about copmlete random people. And the BOF website doesnt seem to me to be about elite orienteering...
£500 for an 8 day trip to an event which doesnt mean much is a rip off i agree, could have gone to sweden for that

Now who's being elitest - not everyone is blessed with your talent and potential Mark - for many this will probably be the pinnacle of their international orienteering career and for those who qualified through selection it does represent an achievement of sorts. For those who didn't it probably won't get any loftier than this unless the experience provides an enormous incentive in iteself - time will tell - at least this debate will raise the competition on the Scottish agenda as it does not seem to have been very high on their list of priorities until now so that has got to be good news:wink:

Apologies to you Mrs H, it is great that there is a report about World Schools up, I didn't want to slag you for your effort. I was thinking more about how in order for the scottish intrest in this competition to increase they need to be mentioned in the publicity at least.
it's all fun

..and my apologies for not having anything on the soa site - that will be rectified. I had it in mind to do it but just haven't had time this week...
and .. a question I'd like some advice on...whats the general opinion on responsibility for making sure sure newsworthy items appear on a web site in any case? Is it the webmaster or is it the general readership?
Like everyone else I don't have unlimited time and often have better things to do than trawling for news...like running in Sluie or Glen Dye for example! Hence whilst I'll do my best, if I don't know something, I don't know something.
So I'm at least partially dependant upon others requesting stuff be posted...and you'd probably be surprised at how rarely that happens. So a general plea I suppose (maybe on behalf of any webmaster) - if you don't see info you think should be appearing how about sending the info in...don't just leave it to someone else.

i can certainly see that blair has aged in the last few yers as for the guy with big hair, i'm afraid i couldn't possibly name him due to some new thing from BOF preventing the naming of under-18's without their consent.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

mrs h - im sorry if what i said offended. it wasnt meant to. i think you do a great job, i would justlike to see the "counties" represented a bit more.
awk - all we were saying was that we wanted to hear about the scottish team a bit too. to say things like
seems a bit dramatic. or am i missing something?

in whos opinion?yours?bsoa?hmm. from an association that is british that sends an english team. ok.
soawebman - the reliance of a website has to be on the "webmaster", or at least the organisation behind the webmaster. if an organisation is going to make a go of things on the internet, they have to be prepared to put someone in charge who has the time to do it properly, or heavily support someone who has some time and has kindly donated that time. it seems from your post that they have done neither. in this site, readership submissions are welcomed, encouraged and very very much appreciated, but they make up a small percentage of our news. and a large percentage of those submissions are because we ask peple for them. i like the soa site btw, i personally think it is the best o site in the uk, in both design and content. i think you do a wonderful job.
