Been out in the spring sunshine today, on a great area, (got a contour-only map too) planning a junior coaching weekend.
And then I thought of you.
Influence coaching on-line, real-time.
Will nopesporters share their top ten favourite O training exercises? (not the after-O)ones on this forum?
Which ones do you get most from, what's been best for you and for what technique? What was fun/useful when you were 9,10, 11, 12.......18 years old?
Only a truely deafening silence will disappoint me !
Pick it up and run with it; I know you can

great responses so far, but sadly no sand-dunes where I was today. Lots of little knolls though, so line course sounds good.
Lots of scope for relocation too, particularly on the contour-only (lucky I had the complete map too, or I might never have got out of there today...)
Too old? Never!
Keep them coming.... please!

Thinking back to when were a junior, and to what juniors I'm working with now like most: pairs work. One that seems really popular: pursuit-O (and also dead easy to organise); also terrain structuring/map memory). Short lap relays (clock relay has been most popular lately). Fun: pontoon. Length is a real determiner with my current groups (under-14): need to be short loops. Just ask if need more detailed explanations.
Hope that helps.

the junior forum? Yes please!
You got it brooner! current 18s/20/21s and greats/elites inspire the juniors. Having you around shows what's possible; (and with nopesport you can be almost anywhere!) Don't let the word "juniors" get between me and hot tips from the top!
Mrs H. what set them itching to get back out there after training?
Speler, got a feel for what keeps them coming back/moves them on in leaps and bounds?
awk, I'll be in touch. Done the courses, read the books, looking for new dimension (and/or meaning of life? )
Google "orienteering training exercises"; mostly find sites for companies running corporate leadership courses. Says something....

something which i maybe found useful when i was still 25: run some course in the woods w somebody else and talk to them all the time (while running) about what you see on the ground and on the map. this forces you to concentrate all the time on navigation and knowing where you are. fairly straightforward and hope this helps.
how can people be too old to comment?

traffic lighting exercises can be useful too
but the relays are the fun bit, and you can do them in so many different ways. Sometimes you can arrange them so that you collect the controls in at the same time.

Relocations always good, and the one where you haveto draw your own map b4 you run on it.
I reckon that once you get to a certain age/level the best practices are those that put you under pressure at speed, so racing with others around you, 2ndleg relay simulation is a good one.

Im not a fan of either clock relays or loops (unless theyre v.technical) althoguh both are common factors in any training session. I would say the pressure races are the best and most useful, especially for me because i definetly need to learn to cope under pressure.
