its easier said than done. i think on the whole it's a good magazine for jumiors. having interviews of top orienteers could give people an aim for the future. if u have the idea of junior editor - why not suggest it and maybe one of you be it if you have the ideas.

Used to always be the way, not sure why/when it stopped but i'm sure if someone was to offer then they'd be more than willing to let you get involved:
compass sport website wrote:...Route Choice#5 sections, which were edited by a promising junior, the fee hopefully going a little way towards their travel and kit costs. Amongst these former editors are Tim Lenton, Oli Johnson, today's Junior coach Jason Inman and, of course, 2003 Sprint World Champion Jamie Stevenson.

heres the score on that front, thanks to awk for clearing this up:
Awk wrote:The junior editor was phased out after 2-3 issues of RC5 as a separate magazine.
The reason that the junior editor was stopped was that the last incumbent couldn't put in the time needed for a full magazine (as opposed to the 2 pages in each Compass Sport previously), and we couldn't find anybody else to take that amount of work on at that time.

Routes & comments from interland people, things about other events around the country, even if they weren't big comps, interviews with juniors. looking back there was the interview with colin olivant and the comments from bsoa, but it would also be good to have things about training techniques, fitness stuff, profiles of juniors etc.
And i dunno about anyone else, but i always find the Search magazine really boring! (no offence bsoa, but it doesn't really seem as if it is aimed at juniors).
definately
just a suggestion how about a [nope] section? could this work?

This is for everyone who has an opinion on RC5, whether or not you've posted (though you should have done!!) Andrew Kelly (awk) has sent me his take on the situation, here are some of the comments relevant to RC5 etc:
"BOF have simply adopted policy recommended by the Child Protection Unit. Not quite a command, but as a governing body they would have to have some extremely good reasons not to follow those recommendations. My own view (expressed at the time) is that its way OTT and smacks totally of nanny state, but it's there and can't be ignored. That's the problem with being an 'official' organisation. (It's why Suse can continue to publish names in Compass Sport - it's not a BOF publication). There may be ways round the policy, but it all came into place too soon before I left BOF to do much investigation into how.
As the person who started RC5 up as a separate mag, I am pretty narked at the way this political correctness is affecting the sport. It can only be bad for orienteering. My son, who has his photo in RC5, is pretty narked too!!
At one time RC5 was just 8 pages. To be able to increase the size of it, we did a deal with the BSOA to incorporate Search as a supplement aimed at teachers. RC5 therefore got another 4 pages, so it's meant to be 12 pages for juniors and 4 for teachers. It's now sent not only to BOF junior members, but all member schools of the BSOA.
The only reason the magazine is largely written by 2 over 50's is because they are the ones writing. Having been responsible for a lot of the editorial for the 3-4 years before last September, the effort getting anybody to contribute is enormous, and the result didn't always justify the time spent on it. However, maybe nopesport could be a channel for getting more junior contributors. I know that when Suse and I worked on the mag, we were dead keen for junior contributions, and I'm sure the current management would be overjoyed if more juniors came forward. Maybe there could be some roving reporters for RC5?"
It seems It's not entirely BOF's fault that the Child Protection Act has ruined some ofthe best bits of Junior life, but there's another side to this....
Anne Tiivas from NSPCC and CPSU (Child Protection in Sport Unit) has confirmed that the HOC system (where parents and juniors give permission in advance) is perfectly acceptable.
A certain senior member of BOF is still a little unsure on the situation though:
"Anne
However I am now a little confused.
The CPSU Briefing Paper 2/01 contains some easy rules to follow regarding the use of images. The paper includes much information about the images themselves but little about any accompanying details. The British Orienteering Federation has adopted those rules for its own publications and is in the process of producing guidance for our Clubs and Associations. However, some of your response below seems to be at odds to what appears in the Briefing Paper.
My interpretation, and what I was going to include in my advice to Clubs and Associations, was that no accompanying details should be included with any images but it would appear that there are circumstances where this is not so. I know that a revised Briefing Paper was in preparation, which may cover these points, but I am unaware of its publication.
Can you clarify please?
Regards

So really, if we want something done about this, then we need to make constructive criticism about the way in which the needs of juniors are met. I'm currently drafting a letter/email to BOF adressing both my own and those of people posting in the forum's opinions and highlighting the key issues which have arisen. (Does anyone object to their opinions and views being used?)
So far we've had lots and lots of ideas put forward (some original, and some that have been used before but were obviously a hit):
Route comparisons from large events
Fantasy League column
Junior Editors
More profiles of both senior and junior orienteers
Training Ideas
Games and Quizzes
Regional Squad updates?
(Sorry if I've missed any..)
Personally the idea of having one or perhaps several junior editors sounds great, but they'd have to give up time to do it, and continue to do so through exams etc.. It really requires imput from all of us - to write reports and get involved and not expect other people to do it for us! I'll admit now that I've never sent in a report or anything similar to RC5, and I regret that now! Perhaps Nopesport is a good means of boosting the popularity and suitability of RC5... watch this space

i think it would be good if there were lots of juniors on the rc5 team, then they could be responsible for a small column or page, and it wouldnt be too much work for them. then they could email their stuff to one person (prob and adult) to compile it all. i think it would be good if it was a bit longer too...at the mo i can read it in 5 mins

i'll try not to post such a huge message now! hillary palmer has this message for all juniors:
As I edit RC#5 with Suse I would be overjoyed if juniors sent me
articles but my experience of the last 2 issues is that people promise
but don't deliver - so perhaps you could spread the work and articles
and photos will flood in??!
