Low turn out for BOC UKCup race
Only 36 on the men's UK cup course at Simonside - piles of points for Ed and every finisher guaranteed to get something. It's not like it's that far away and the orienteering will be much better than Sherwood Pines, so why is nobody bothering? As far as I can remember this is the first ever UK cup race in the North East (I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong) - it's a shame not to support it. Did the cancellation of the relays make that much difference?

It's the entry fee that made the difference for me. Having waited to hear about the relays I then missed the extension of the "cheap" entry before getting round to entering in early February. On discovering that the entry fee 6 weeks in advance was £15 I decided not to bother. (I know I've made comments about late entries but I was well before the closing date of 20th Feb.)
For what is a non-championship race for the elites even the cheapest entry of £11 seems excessive compared with badge events of about £8.
If the relays had been on the Sunday I would have gone - and entered earlier.
Also given the racing calender in the subsequent weeks: Spring Cup or Scottish O League, Senior Home International, JK, yet another race is not really necessary.

BOC this weekend
I definately agree about the entry fee - I was going to enter about four weeks ago, only to find out I had missed all closing dates and had to pay £15 for one race! A little excessive surely, especially as there was still a month to go until the event. Plus all the costs of getting there.... Can anyone really afford to go orienteering after they graduate? It would probably cost me about a pound for each UK cup point I got (a punter way of looking at it I know, but there's nothing wrong with punters!).
Don't get me wrong, I think that people should make the effort to get to UK cup races, and on the whole I do. But the North East is a very long way to go for a lot of people, and the price doesn't help.

All the more points for us whose parents did the entries! Maybe this will be the UK Cup race where a junior wins. A lot less competition, joint with a good run from a top junior could see Kitch forking out that money.
But i must agree, if it wasn't for the fact that my parents paid my entry fee, i would not have gone, especially as i'd have probably entered less than a month before hand.

The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

Ian couldn't you have sorted a trip and the union would have paid your entries would they not?
Where did all those £15s go? -not far enough I know. Liam's creative accounting.
I am going because I entered when I thought the relays were on the Sunday. Now it does seem a bit pointless, I just didn't think enough about the training i could do elsewhere. There is a fell race, Welsh selection one that I want to do and a relay in Sweden that would have been good. Actually a rest and a weekend at home would have been good too. But now it's all planned I'm up for a good technique session, it looks good and it's fairly short.
