I think that another problem euoc and shouc have is that they really don't have to do much, we know orienteers are always going to go to either uni, and if we don't attract frehers so what! we still have an o club in full bloom.

GG was on his own, he needed people to make warwick a uni o club, so there must have been a lot of will power stemming from the fact that he wa s on his own, and needed to attract newcomers or he was a non starter,
maybe if we took that on else where it might work,
let the main runners get on with the job, and really put everything into the freshers side.

i.e almost split the club into new and continuing orienteers!

I know someone from our club who went to Sheffield and not being in the top flight as one might say felt very left out in the cold - I'm not being critical but I think there is something in what Wattok said

Nah, there's loads of non-elites in ShUOC: Hargreaves, Middleditch, Hodges et al (although it could be argued that these are the most intimidating "members").

the thing is with this is that its hard to get rid of that image when just sitting in the pub at the start of term, everyone who knows each other wants to catch up or whatever and won't pay the newbies much attention in general (thats if any of them bother their asses to make it to the pub) and the only way for them to really get involved in the club is to come away on a training weekend for the banter, the uni's training weekend was a perfect opportunity to get involved with the club but very few people took it.

and wattok getting people lost and doing other things to poor girls doesn't help keep them in the sport!!!

i think its not being an elite member as such.
Everyone knows everyone in orienteering, and spends lots of time together especially in uni clubs. Maybe it can be thought of we are some times clique-ish?

without a doubt, think of most of the people in EUOC, a large proportion are from Scotjos, and go back since the early days - i've known you since about 95-96, the rest you know from competitions, tours, parties. it must be quite intimidating as being a fresher you expect that most folk will be in the same boat but with the number of orienteers joining the club and already knowing folk it's not quite the same.

for instance drew, u came to euoc at the same time as loads of freshers, yet i have known you since you were young enough to be dropped on your head same as chepls etc

i had a great thought. but its been foiled. the 11 person relay would be a great chance for freshers to get involved in the club as there are easy courses on offer, good team banter & of course a victorious Edinburgh team.

sadly its before term starts. arse
