After the recent discussions about pictorial control descriptions you may be interested in the two page summary I have produced. It should print out OK at double sided A4.

Thanks Simon,
I have printed out copies (Firefox is so much better at that than IE) and will laminate them to display at our next schools league event. Experimentally, I think I will only put pictorial descriptions on the maps, but make text versions available at the Start for those who insist.
And now, back to preparing lunch.
Happy Christmas everybody

Simon, they are excellent, especially the juxtaposition of the map depiction and the description symbol.
Many thanks

I'm afraid I have to admit that someone has spotted an error in the original version that I put on the web. The "north west tip" symbol was in fact a "north west corner (outside)" symbol. I've now updated all versions to correct this.
Sorry for this.

On that subject - and I must say the pages are really excellent - is there any chance you could add the map symbols for distinctive tree, rootstock, platform and a few others that seem to have been accidentally missed off (including ant hill - not even sure what the map symbol for that is).
Good work Simon, many thanks - I see the pages were on display at the BAOC event today so are already being put to good use.

I left them out deliberately because they will vary from map to map (which is equivalent to saying that the IOF Specification does not define what map symbol they relate to). Most of them would end up as a circle or cross. Putting a brown triangle for a platform would make it BOF-specific, since there is no separate IOF symbol for a platform.
But on reflection perhaps it is better to put in the various possibilities, rather than leave a gap. Watch this space.

P.S. With regard to ant hills and termite mounds, most of the maps I have run on in Australia use brown crosses. The wonderfully named Shotgun Avenue map in the Hunter Valley expects runners to be skilled in insect identification, since it uses two sizes of brown triangle (large and small termite mound), two sizes of brown cross (large and small meat-ant nest) and an underlined brown cross (ant-nest with termite mound).

Used pictorial descriptions for all courses today at Esholt. It seemed to work without a hitch.
We had a large junior turnout covering a wide variety of abilities. A display at enquiries of Simon's 2 pages plus a display copy of text descriptions of White, Yellow, Orange and Red helped the few who appeared to need any help. No reports received to date of anyone being thrown by the pictorial descriptions.
Unless I hear otherwise, I will encourage our club to make pictorials a matter of policy.

Used them to go through control descriptions with 3 sets of people today at our district event at haugh Wood - thanks simon. they are copyrighted to you - what is the situation if I make copies and give them out to beginners?

I guessed this was coming, but I'm not really sure what the exact legal position would be. I'm happy for it to be copied and distributed freely for non-commercial purposes, and it's available for download to anyone who wants it. The copyright is just an attempt to stop people passing it off as their own.

That is very good Simon, i will make a few copies with your running man on the bottom and hand them out to my MADO people in the first couple of events and then i might introduce a little quiz for them at subsequent events to make sure they've been paying attention.
I know what you mean - I've had my work passed off by other people before now too - its irritating to say the least.

If you take a closer look at the photo at the top of the Maprunner home page you'll find that "running man" is in fact Heather Monro at Battersea. I won't tell her if you don't.
A small prize (?) for anyone who identifies the orienteer on the right of the logo.
