Don't you just hate those people with fancy technology who already have access to future series and flaunt it in front of us 5 station bound mortals.. so I'm on Series 6 of West Wing yaboosucks!
And yes Babybel it did belatedly occur to me that I would be sharing the jackpot with a few other people.drrr

"In some ancient Greek drama, an apparently insoluble crisis was solved by the intervention of a god, often brought on stage by an elaborate piece of equipment. This "god from the machine" was literally a deus ex machina." So there you go!

i'm no literature expert and i'm not going to pretend i am, but i believe Deus ex Machina (Machine of God) is a tool used by writers to bend a plot to fit the outcome they want.
for example the plane arriving at the end of Lord of the flies is a Deus ex Machina for reasons i remember understanding at the time.
also in the final scene of Donnie Darko he mutters "Deus ex Machina" before gretchen gets hit by the car.
i don't watch lost.

I think intially, the Deus ex Machina was brought on to resolve some otherwise intractable plot point in a play. If we're hoping for any sort of resolution here, I think we'll be dissapointed. The hatch could just be Macguffin for all we know.
Maybe it's meant literally rather than metaphorically. The island is a God and/or a machine. It certainly seemed to want a sacrifice from Locke. "The god from the machine", may be a point about worshipping technology. Like putting all our trust (faith?) in great hulking lumps of metal to travel vast distances through the air.

It's a magical world. Let's go exploring.

how do you open a hatch that has no handle?
from the inside.
reckon light a fire around the structure. it heats the air inside and pops the hatch. or ruptures a wall - either way he's gettin in there.
as to whats inside - samsonite.
Flickin the light switch on and off.

Too true, the 'Dad' lead was infuriating enough - what an unbelievable b... not very nice man he was. Remember I'm heading your way with my Richard and Judy bottle of wine Samsonite and I might not share it if you spill all!! Good episode though- what has Locke done to deserve it?!

Dammit, i've been sucked into this whole watching of lost now! keep being in the lounge when mum is watching and then see half of it, so i have to watch the other half... i annoy her loads though cos i keep having to ask who everyone is and what the history of all the characters and their interlinkage is... well confused by locke though... he seems quite on the delusional side of things to me...
