I'm just back from looking at the WMOC region... below are some thoughts:
1. Weiner Neustadt is a small provisional town about 40km south of Vienna. The area is as flat as a pancake if not flatter. There's not so much in the way of hotel accommodation in the town. Access from the south was restricted due to reconstruction. 52000 allied bombs were dropped in April 1945 on the town
2. WN is on a direct train line frome Vienna... coming from Graz you need 1 change
3. Best flight options to me seem to be Air Berlin Stansted to Vienna (wait until Jan for schedule) or Ryanair to either Graz (Souther Austria) or Bratislava (Slovakia). BA did some good deals last time I looked.
4. For those staying in hotels the breakfasts should be good enough for athletes, plenty bread, museli, fruit etc etc.
5. Cost of living seems slightly less that UK if you use the 'beer' index... about 2.70€ a pint
6. Forests - although the WN area is flat the qualifiers & finals will be hilly... they are off the valley floor... looking at them they seem to have plenty of nice smooth grassy forests floors to run on with not too much crap on the ground. Contour features seem pretty smooth. Plenty of paths etc etc. The qualifiers are around 20km north of WN & the final around 20 km south down the A2 motorway.
7. Toursist programme - seems the natural thing to do on the rest day is to head for the hills... The Salamander train will take you upto around 1800m and you can wander for around another 200 - 300 m to the mountain top... 3 or 4 cafes enroute... a good day out. BUT I guess it'll be busy with orienteers so best to pre book tickets.
8. GBR WMOC 2006 Polo Shirts - will be produced for anyone from GBR wanting one... not wanting to advertise I won't say where you get info... but use your imagination:)
9. Hotel in Vienna... anyone planning to visit Vienna before or after WMOC I'd stayed here:

nice enough place & handy for the City

We did a 5 day based at Wiener Neustadt in '96. Day 1 area was a flat as a pancake (not a single contour on the A3 1:15 map) hunting forest that was hundreds of parallel rides at 50 metre intervals and a bit of vegetation. Definately very strange! Every other day was hilly.
Roger Underhill found a very dubious shop to spend a lot of time in, otherwise I can't remember anything else about Wiener Neustadt.
For our rest day we went to Budapest....
