It's the CompassSport Cup this weekend, supposedly the main inter-club competition in the country, but I haven't seen a single comment here about it... so does anyone here actually care?
Entries for our (East Anglian) round are a bit down on the last time we hosted it two years ago, but what is most concerning is that while some clubs are taking it seriously and bringing a large team (eg. SOS with 52 runners in the Trophy) others seem to have struggled to find a team at all (eg. LEI with 21 runners in the Cup) - it's no coincidence that SOS are regular finalists.
Does the regional format mean that only the few clubs with a chance of qualifying make an effort, unlike the older head-to-head matches where two weaker clubs might meet in the first round and have a chance of winning occasionally?
How well do you think your club will do? And who will win in the end?
Cheers, Mark.

Well Interlopers didn't even bother entering this year (in common with most of the Scottish Clubs).
We qualified for the final last year but couldn't get enough people to go to East Anglia - and with only 1 younger junior where 4 could score even our top team wouldn't have been competitive. The other Scottish qualifier didn't go either.
With the final in Humberside this year likely to get the same response we decided it would be fairer not to enter at all.

Compassport Cup
I care!
The West Midlands round will be closely contested between DVO, HOC, BOK, WCH & OD. I believe the last 4 are all bringing strong teams - don't know about DVO.
Could go to anyone on the day - but I hope OD triumph of course!
The old way of having a number of rounds was a problem with motivating enough people for a succession of events when we already have fixture congestion on some days. Just look at how few WM juniors ran in the Galloppen last year as they were off enjoying themselves at selection races, Interland, FCC etc.

I'm pretty annoyed I can't go home for my round but the exams start at 9.30 the day after so there's no chance. I do think it's a good competition but yes, maybe slightly invalidated by half the clubs not even bothering.
As for the Scots - wouldn't a club version of the Jamie Stevenson trophy be a better idea? Or is there already a club theme to SOL etc? I certainly wouldn't want to travel to humberside from Inverness/most places in Scotland.

Looks like WM could be a very competiitve competition. Especially with BOK have 3 clubs who could easily make the final.
Wouldn't it be fairer though for the number of clubs competing in each round (and their size possibly) to be proportional to the number of qualifiers. Off the Chase only one club will qualify from a very strong round whereas NOC will go to East Anglia, and being fair to other cup clubs there, walk into the final even with a reduced turnout.
Apparently this competiiton used to be the premier club event, but now it seems to by dying, especially noting Scottish comments. Its the only competition for seniors of its type in the country, shouldn't more be being done to bring clubs together and promote banter and competiiton?

The problem is if you make it any more serious it tends to bring in the idea of some centralised competition which suggests selection etc etc...half the idea used to be that anyone could walk up to the CSC and have a good chance of scoring - my mum is dead chuffed whenever she counts, but I doubt she'd be selected if our club had to pick runners (sorry mum!).
It's a difficult one - it was failing first which is why the format was changed..I used to like the old knock out round before AIRE was a force to be reckoned with on a club scale, but at the moment, we seem to be the only club in Yorkshire who seem to have a regular turnout to events, and definitely the only one with enough quality juniors to count and so (fingers crossed, I hope I'm not counting my chickens) qualifying should be relatively easy. I have no idea how to make this competition any fairer or better, but I think it's an important one for club spirit and let's face it, our clubs need plenty more of that.

every year Lakeland discusses whether to enter or not, always do, sometimes do okay in the first round then find out the final is in EA or somewhere like that which no-one can be bothered going to (my mum ran women's open in the final last year - that's how thin on the ground the team was). Having said that I'm running in the first round on Sunday, mainly because it's at Formby which is a nice little area I haven't been to for a while...

This is because we are great!!!
Why don't BOF introduce some kinda proper prize. If they ever get a squad house why don't give a weeks free board to the winning club in the trophy and cup. (obviously the trophy is more important).

No, EBOR are running in the Yorkshire round in a quality SYO forest near Barnsley. As are Newcastle and Tyneside, which is quite a long way for them to travel.
I believe the rules regarding who counts have changed this year, reducing the emphasis on M/W21/M35 and increasing it on the older classes, 'representing the shift in BOF membership'.

SOS is probably the most competitive club in East Anglia but that doesn't mean competitions haven't been tight in the past.
