Congrats to Craney - great result. That French bloke who won in his qualifying heat wasn't even in the top 10
Looking at that map of the qualifying area, it seems a bit "false" to say that course is 1.4km, as it looks like you can never take the straight line route. Probably nearer 2.5km than 1.4, so why don't they say that? if there's areas that can't be crossed in more normal terrain, say a high fence, wouldn't the line marking the quickest (straight line) go round as well, adding a bit to the course length?

well if you did that it would insinuate the route you have to take, there are plenty of different routes thourhg the little streets.
the IOF doesnt have high fence as a symbol anymore, its uncrossable fence, and since it is forbidden to cross any feature marked as uncrossable, (be it wall, water body, fince, marsh or crag[and all that do will be DSQ], the line must go round.
you cant have loads of lines following the streets, and covering the detail, with all the possible routes, it would just be silly.

Yes, I agree, what I was trying to say that they could give a more realistic idea of the actual course length rather than just measure the straight line route between controls. You could always put on the optimum course length, without giving the actual course.
It would be stupid to have lines following roads/streets etc as you have mentioned, and for the fact that it would be much harder to see which was your next control - the line is generally helpful in those circumstances!
Actually, from the IOF rules:
The course lengths shall be given as the length of the straight line from the start via the controls to the finish deviating for, and only for, physically impassable obstructions (high fences, lakes, impassable cliffs etc.), prohibited areas and marked routes.
So a row of houses isn't a physically impassable obstruction...

Well, if so, according to the PWT site:
- Winning times of approximately 15 minutes (women) and 12 minutes (men)
so they're a bit out, aren't they?
what I'm trying to point out is that it seems a bit odd to say that the best orienteers in the world are winning a "park race" in 10 mins/k because of the way the course length is measured.

no, i think its fantastic that they are pushed to the limit by having to make such copmlex route choices. maybe there were slightly too long, but its only 20 mins or so, its not like having a WOC classic race to long to 110mins, they can all cope with it.
