Hey, I'm an Australian Orienteer, and I coming over to the UK in September to study at Heriot Watt in Edinburgh for a year.
At the moment I'm planning on living at Lenard Lorna Hall on campus, is that a long way from where training happens? would it be very inconvient? where should i look at living? or does anyone know of anyone who needs a flat mate?
Thanks

Heriot Watt Campus is about 6 miles out of town but has good bus links in and out. The travelling time (approx 20-25mins) does make it a bit more of an effort to get to training but you can get to most of the organised training no problem.
A nice alternative to the bus in and out is to cycle along the canal which runs from heriot Watt the whole way into the centre of town. This takes about 30-35mins each way (24mins is my best time tho!)

Or you could live in town, sure there must be some orienteers who have a room free!
i lived in town all this year and either cycled in or got the bus, cycling is as quick if not quicker than the bus or car most days.

The training sessions that orienteers in Edinbugh get together for during the week are in town. At weekends its either training in the Pentland Hills, or a race of some sort - and since most people live in town, then thats where the cars head out from.
If you live on Campus (out of town) at HW then lectures and other residents of Halls are on your doorstep.
If you live in town then training, town(obviously) and the broader social scene is on your doorstep.
Like Bruce I did a year at HW living in town, travelling out to lectures was fine, its just part of the days work.
What stage are you at with studies ?
Campus is likely to be lots of first years. In town you can more easily socialise with a broader range of the people, people of your choice.

Lenord Horner Hall are kept for final yr/masters/post grad students and its fairly boring living out there for that stage of studying. Nice accommodation tho.
I spent 1st year on campus and it was wicked but reckon its only good for 1st yr. Spent the last 3yrs commuting in and out and it works out fine. Far handier living in town for everything else. Also means if you make the effort to go out to uni you actually stay there for a bit of the day and do some work, instead of just popping in for your lectures then going back to bed!

Hi Mace - I'm Alison O'Neil (I guess we might have met at JWOC last year?). I might know of a possibility for you if you want to live in town. If you want to e-mail me about it my address is s0348367@sms.ed.ac.uk, though I may have only intermittent e-mail access over the next couple of weeks as I'm going to be in Scotland orienteering... Otherwise phone's 07817770887. Look forward to hearing from you (or seeing you in September?)! Alison.

Alison,
You may want to give Mace your land line telephone number, you'll pick up the cost of the call on your mobile, this could be huge from Australia.

rubbish - if someone calls your mobile while you're in your home country then you don't have to pay anything, wherever they're calling from. it's only if you're abroad that it costs money to receive calls.

If true, sorry for the confusion.
Most of my bill is international calls, but I must say that I had not checked whether I was in the UK when I received them, just assumed. Which brings us back to Ass U Me.
