Hydrocolloid dressing are used on existing blisters and compeed is an example of a shaped, tapered egde expensive but good hydrocolloid dressing. Buying or begging a dressing such as 10*10cm Granuflex allows you to cut a small piece to the size needed. They all need holding in place and leucotape works but a stretch tape like 7.5cm elastoplast adhesive bandage works better as it stretches arroung the heel and can usually survive a couple of runs. I have had blisters where the skin has torn on the top edge of leucotape which is the best I think for ankle support strapping.

most hydrocolloid dressings - such as granuflex are self adhesive - as long as you don't cut them down to a size where there is not enough dressing beyond the wound edge to allow them to stick.
They come in a variety of thicknesses and flexibilities
Granuflex - thick hydrocolloid
Duoderm - medium thickness hydrocolloid
Tegaderm - thin film dressing.
All these are self adhesive and can be left on till they fall off.
They aid healing by keeping a wound clean and moist and in the case of the thicker ones by providing physical protection to the damaged area.
(note healing is quicker when a wound is kept moist not dry - a dry wound is going to be more resistant to infection but by using a hydrocolloid dressing to keep out infection the wound is better off moist)

I agree they are all self adhesive in normal use but I find that with running they end up in a squelchy mess in your sock unless held in place with tape extending arround the foot when they can be left on for several days running & showering.
