Peter are you a close friend of Michael Jackson or something - it's just i'm getting the impression that you and I live in different worlds - do you really think it's that easy? and if you do, well you go and do it!

What the sport needs is a big scandal or a "bad boy" that gets the sport exposure - just look what drugs do for athletics. If anyone knows anyone who wants to do some blood doping or some steroids - I'm the guinea pig
Now, I know you're a feminist, and I think that's adorable, but this is grown-up time and I'm the man.

It was just a turn of phrase, it is more about Loughborough than anything else. They are in the same BUSA leagues as us, they get a hell of a lot of sport funding - hence good athletes - but most of the good runners I have met from there are doing SS and are empty headed.

Sorry Peter , I was just trying to think 'outside of the box' as they say. but believe me if it was so easy to get national coverage then someone would already have done it. I have however had a lot of success at local level and if everyone did there bit then the message would get across albeit gradually.
My nominations are probably Peter Palmer, Carol McNeill (who if she had got into the sport young enough would certainly have been world champion) and the Scottish Association for being slick and professional

has anyone ever read a sport section of the newspaper? well the ones i usual glance thru (while looking for the cartoons) go something like
premier league football
premierleague football
premier league football
fooot ball football
football football football
rugby one page
cricket - even in scotland for [nope]s sake
horse racing
digest
and if you're really lucky and its a saturday supplement then you'll get one paqge on a minority sport - usually a big run or some talented young athlete.
people seem to think that getting orienteering featured in this is going to result in soaring membership and new world champions. seems a bit foolish to me, since newspapers have probably done a fair bit of research and found out that waht their readership wants is to sit on their asses reading about foot [noping] ball every day all week, rather than any sport their gonna be remotely interested in playing.
but as braddie says, loads of people are running at the moment, thats what we need to tap if we want orienteering to grow. we need regular coverage in teh running magazines like runners world (never seen any o, but i dont read it very often) and Running Fitness (had some good articles last year). It would be a two way thing - these magazines can give good things to o'ers as well - i bought them to read the o articles but now i buy them regulalry because theyre good reads.
and not just the glossy magazines but all running club newsletters/websites etc. arrangign challenge matches - o clubsa vs. running clubs half running half o'ing... let them see its a competitive and fun sport.
this is obviously easier if theres a slight overlap between o clubs and running clubs - im not sure how common this is over the country, i just know it is pretty common in edinburgh, but there are shed load of orienteers here.

Aye braddie what is wrong with studying sports science?
Studying sport science at loughborough is a great thing for an athlete. Great sport university and great training with Britains best athletes attending.
Think some people get confused with the PE course....
...
Sports Science is the study of significant physiological, biomechanical, psychological and sociological influences on human performance during the preparation for, the participation in and the recovery from sport and exercise.
what more would any athlete want to study?

yeah scotia you're far better studying a proper dgree like that than mathemetical physics eh
actually having heard sandra revising for her sport science degrees i was quite jealous - i wanted to know all the things she was learning. definitely wanted to know about them more than partial bloody differentiation!

Which means...
Training with and talking to runners.
Appropriate introductory events for runners, i.e. Long, competitive, runnable, technically easy and accessible.
Thats my vote for EPO anyway....

I think I've only ever read one article on orienteering in runners world and it was a bit misguided, the guy had just turned up to the event and tried to work it out for himself and being a runner thought well I might as well do the longest course, it isn't that long. If they had articles written by someone who knew anything about orienteering I reckon it could be very beneficial to the sport

there was a very good one end of last year good piccies of ali roberston the elite winners at the JK including uncle dickie grining like an idiot. article was good a bit of history explantion etc
i think what i would like to see is something in the colour supplements like weekend in the times i am sure the telegraph, guardian has something similar for introduction articles. for event reporting i think about a 1/4 page article + picture in the sports sections for JK, BEOC, World Champs should be what is aimed for.
