Where are all the girls??
Looking at the fcc results this weekend made me think. There was something like only 3 W20s in the short race. I know a couple of us embra girlies werent there but even still there would only have been 6 or 7 in what is supposed to be the top junior comp in the uk. Why are there so few girls orienteering? What is more interesting... guys orienteering or girls orienteering and why?
it's all fun

after wading through a whole lot of crap on the net and in my o-files i couldn't find the analysis data which was sent out a while ago regarding membership data. I seem to remember that pre-2002 overall member numbers were gradually decreasing but picked up again in 2003 after o-week. Regarding the sex difference the were slightly more males than females, but not a vastly huge difference. I couldn't remember what the class numbers were, but you'll be surprised, there probably was hardly anyone running on the day. To get more accurate data you'll have to wait until the new membership figures come out or have a surf round yourself
Now to do that large pile of overdue coursework

aye
There are few girls orienteering because they are too interested in the mainstream goings on in society and prefer to watch "the salon" or participate in "cool" sports such as snowboarding.
Between 18 and 22 girls are either travelling the world, or at university. They are spending all their time and effort trying to fit in and hence dont orienteer.
Orienteering is fastly becoming an old person's sport (in britain) and the nopesport revolution is trying to change this and dig orienteering out of the grave that it is heading for.

aha
they are all doing cross country instead. well no but the entries for the english national cross country is up this year for women but down for men. apparently it's the paula radcliffe effect.
the w20 fcc has been going downhill for a while. you used to have to at least make an effort to do a few races to get in the final. now it looks like you (m) particularly can happily do the uk cup races all season, possibly one fcc score is all you need to qualify. on the other hand the w18 seems to be thriving so what diverts them away as they go up to 20? beer? i was well impressed with some of the glenmore kids, especially steph blom. also how come the nopesport report just focusses on all your mates and not a word about cerys who kicked ass. reporting or just a mutual appreciation society?
one last thing. what did everyone think about the course lengths on the junior courses today? my mum (a w55 running w50 for interland) had further than the w20s - what's that about? apparently it's about making it more accesible generally. spoke to a technical guy and he said that it's a small minority who need further and if so they can just run 21. but as m said fcc is supposed to be the premier junior competition.

in our defence helen(?), nopesport is just a wee operation. we don't get paid for this (in fact so far we have paid out of our own pockets). while we do strive to report as evenly and well as possible, our main concern for the fcc articles was to get the top results posted asap, then fill in the blanks as the information materialised. We are very keen to contact cerys and get her take on the races, but as we do not know her personally, and do not have a contact for her, we felt that we would wait and add that part of the story later. (Incidentally, if anyone does know her, could you please pass on the message that we would love to hear her story of the weekend at news@nopesport.com) We have reported more about our "mates" purely because they were the first people we could get hold of (a simple mobile call is the easiest and quickest way to get info), and therefore got reported on first. the rest will come later as we manage to get hold of them. if you don't like what we do, that is unfortunate, but we are trying our best. the whole mutual appreciation society comment is reasonably insulting, as that is the very situation we are trying to stop.
(and if you think scotia is any mate of ours you are sorely mistaken);)

oops!
didn't mean to insult you. the website is a credit to all of you. i even got the impression you were a professional outfit. sounds like you could do with a copy of the squad address list. xxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com don't know if i should post her number tho. probably against some paedophile act.
samsonite edit: sorry helen, i had to edit that address out. we just dont want anyone getting in trouble. thanks for it though.

where are all the girls
Now stop bickering and get on with it. No one said it would be easy to change the world and it's early days yet. I think the answer to the original question is buried in the various postings, Helen's mother is a keen orienteer - that's a good role model - so's Paula Radcliffe for cross country running. Without some focus it's easy to get distacted by other things - especialy if your not top of the tree like m. (She's put that picture of herself in the pink T shirt just to annoy me) and yes nopesport is vital for the youthing of the sport (youthing - I just made that up - good word Eh? )
the basic problem with women in sport is confidence - and believe me - it gets harder as you get older

maybe bof should put on some women only coaching weekends. i am not sure of the sports physcology behind it (maybe scotia could tell us along with helping my spelling). i have seen somewhere that women perform better in single sex groups.
also promoting to schools there are a few boys only schools that offer orienteering not many girls schools
so if Cheltenham ladies college need a new O coach i am available
