I was in the gym (doing some exercise!!) and I was
(a) wondering what sort of cross training people did, and
(b) what was people's heart rate when doing exercise.
I would appreciate some suggestions on how to vary my other training...
Plus my heart rate hit 182 for 7-10 mins on two of the machines. Is than normal, or am I pushing too hard???

Surely whether your pushing it too much or not from your heart rate can only be worked by knowing your aerobic and anerobic thresholds? Thats as much as my limited knowledge of heart rates will lead me to believe anyway

That sounds quite anaerboic to me! Roughly your maximum heart rate is calcualted by 220 minus your age. Then I think upper aerobic limit is about 70% of that, but on that I'm less sure. I wouldn't have thought you have much to worry about, elite orienteers can be in anaerobic zone for 40% of a classic race. Wot exact stuff u do in gym, bikes? Tried rowers? Though I'm not a sports scientist so perhaps someone who is would give better qualiified advice!

I tend to work on 4 different bands of heart rate depending how hard I want to train
easy <60%
brisk 60-70%
tempo70-80%
intervals/road racing >80%
this is worked out not from your maximum heart rate but by taking the difference between your maximum and resting heart rate, calculating the above percentages then adding them to resting heart rate.
187 would be about 85% for me so that is fairly high, I do tend to find it varies depending on the type of excercise though, my maximum was recorded heading up a hill whilst the recomended way of finding it is to do 3 half mile intervals increasing the effort and you should register a maximum during the last. Hope this helps

i use the stepper (good for your arse muscles), bike and free runner/x-trainer (seems to be called something different at every gym i go to but its the cross country skiing type one). they're all pretty good for using slightly different muscles to running and they're all non-impact.
As for the heart rate i find it difficult to get the rate high doing anything other than running, the max it ever gets to on the above is 165. i uaully aim for above 150...
One of the best cross training sessions i do is spinning, apparently the reason its so good is that it uses both the slow and fast twitch fibers in your muscles.
the gym here just got a virtual spinning screen too so its just like cycling up a real mountain!

i used to do spining every week back home and i reckon it is the best x training i have ever done. i dont do that much x training but if i do it would be on the bikes or the x country ski one rachel was talking about. the great thing about spinning is that you can make a session what you want and it is also really fun. the classes i used to do always had really good music that motivated you to work really hard. you have to try it.

What is this fabled spinning? I've never heard of it but then I am a well known gym hater. The cross training I do comes in the form of a huge group circuits session at Brookes - pumping tunes and some interesting equipment - great workout and good fun aswell.

Okej, that 220 minus your age calculation is not really very accurate. If you are really serious about your training get a heart rate monitor. And book yourself in for and aerobic threshold test and anearobic threshold test down at your local sports science place. From the results you will be able to work out all your training zones etc.
In terms of aerobic cross training the best is cross-counrty skiing, undoubtedly. Next best thing is probably mountain biking (not road biking).

but for most people cross country skiing and mountain biking might not be an option....
becks, spinning is done on static bikes on which you can change the resistance and led by an instructer. there are different positions, sitting, standing right up and then up off the seat as if you are cycling up a big mamma hill. there could be more but i aint sure. and you vary the positions and resistance throughout the class following the tempo of the music. so there will be slow long hills and sprints and stuff. you can make it really hard by turning the resistance up. some classes do press ups on the handel bars too, and there could be more variations.

Spin cycling- brillient used to love the 6AM class back home on the Fridays.
As for the heart rate the max being 220 minus your age, I agree is unreliable.
My max is about 215 yesterday doing hill reps up the seat managed to get it to 208 and for spin cycling usually had it round the 200 mark for the last rep.
Is there any free spinning in edinburgh anywhere?

Tried spinning a few times and I really rate it. Reckon if you were keen enough though you get the same benefit from intervals or hill reps on your bike.
Mharky - Why do you think that MTBing gives you a better workout than on a road bike? I've been riding a both for years, and if I want to get fit and strong quick; it would be the road bike everytime.
